Clinical Lead Job Description

Communication / Relationship skills

to provide clinical leadership, guidance and support to all clinical staff across the service, including support around disagreements in clinical practice

to ensure robust clinical supervision arrangements are in place for all clinical staff across the service

to attend Clinical Governance meetings and provide regular updates and assurance in relation to governance of the service

to lead on ensuring a clear focus on patient involvement and patient experience across the service, demonstrating both engagement and improvement

to lead on the development of quality improvement plans for the service.

Ensure that a strategy is in place to monitor clinical outcomes and reflect on this information to drive service improvement

To ensure that untoward incidents are managed using the Risk Register system, and these are escalated as required to commissioning, safeguarding, regulatory and NHS contractual bodies.

To promote, participate in and actively support the development of strategy, service developments and implementation of new clinical models, guidelines and best practice across the service

To work closely with the Hospital Director to ensure an appropriate use of staff, finance and other resources across the service, providing specific clinical advice and support as required

To promote and lead research and audit activity across the service

To lead on ongoing development of leadership capacity within the service

Knowledge, training and experience

Have achieved, through training and experience, a depth and breadth of specialist knowledge of Clinical Leadership, with a commitment for continuous professional development

Have evidence of Management and Leadership Development geared towards clinical leadership

Specialist knowledge and understanding of regulatory framework requirements

Ability to interpret relevant changes to national policies and guidelines and then to influence to ensure appropriate changes to practice and service delivery reflect these

Manage highly complex, sensitive, or contentious information and engage individuals and key governance groups around this by producing clear, sound, accurate and reasoned findings, reports, conclusions and recommendations

The ability to understand, integrate and support action in response to audit, guidelines, investigations and internal and external reviews in proportionate and fair manner

To be currently engaged in active clinical practice related to forensic mental health

To ensure student nurses on clinical placement are appropriately supervised, assessed and have an effective learning experience

Has up to date knowledge of role and responsibilities under the Mental Health Act 1983 and its application in practice

An understanding of NICE guidelines relevant to patients with a diagnosis of personality disorder and complex trauma.

An understanding of psychological formulation as required by NICE guidance relevant to the patient.

Analysis, Problem Solving and Judgement Skills

Demonstrable skills in leadership and driving the strategic direction of a team

Review in collaboration with others highly sensitive information and reports (i.e. serious untoward incidents, complaints, clinical investigations, risk registers etc) and identify themes and trends as appropriate, identifying and highlighting opportunities to learn

Have a high level of analytical skills and the ability to draw qualitative and quantitative data from a wide range of sources, including highly complex facts or situations and present these in a clear concise manner

Have the ability to analyse numerical and written data, assess options and draw appropriate conclusions

Commitment and understanding of data driven improvement

Will have a high level of critical thinking skills

Keep abreast of new developments locally and nationally and advise on their implications for the service and organisation

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Relevant higher degree e.g. MSc, PhD or other additional clinical qualifications.
• Membership of national professional body.
• Additional experience / CPD activity relating to nursing and other models of care and treatment for people with complex trauma who may have a diagnosis of personality disorder (e.g. DBT, MBT, Safewards, STEPPS, Structured Clinical Management, Relational Security Explorer)
• Additional CPD / experience of use of patient safety and quality improvement methodology relevant to the hospital (e.g. PDSA, PSIRF, RCA).
• Additional CPD / training in healthcare leadership and management and / or clinical supervision.
• Knowledge of relevant specialist services
• Proven commitment to improving clinical care
• Excellent clinical skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Able to manage clinical and systemic complexity and uncertainty
• Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
