Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Low Secure hospital in South Wales for a Forensic Clinical Lead. The applicant needs to have leadership experience within a secure setting, with a focus on quality, continuous improvement and clinical delivery. The hospital has a comprehensive Governance structure in place, but it is hoped the applicant will be a visionary with ambition to develop the service into an outstanding clinical setting.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Lead will be pivotal in leading and managing priority areas such as:

Patient safety

Governance and assurance systems

Strengthening and developing the evidence based therapeutic options and clinical pathways delivered by the service

Lead on improving service user experience and coproduction

Risk identification and management

Actively lead, promote and engage staff and patients in the development and implementation of the services clinical vision, strategy and quality improvements

The post holder will work as an integral part of the team with a specialist role in the development and implementation of services and care pathways. They will provide clinical leadership, supervision and support to colleagues

About us

Located in countryside close to Cardiff, Heatherwood Court offers accommodation across four single-gender units.

Opened in 2008, Heatherwood Court provides forensictreatment and rehabilitation for individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Adults with severe and enduring mental illness requiring a low secure environment
  • Male and female mentally disordered offenders requiring a low secure environment
  • Women with mental health needs and personality disorders requiring a locked ward

At Heatherwood our focus is on rehabilitation and recovery. By providing our patients with relationship and life skills, alongside resilience and coping strategies, we promote the emotional stability which can provide the sound foundation needed to make a successful move back into the community.

Clinical Lead Job Description

Communication / Relationship skills

to provide clinical leadership, guidance and support to all clinical staff across the service, including support around disagreements in clinical practice

to ensure robust clinical supervision arrangements are in place for all clinical staff across the service

to attend Clinical Governance meetings and provide regular updates and assurance in relation to governance of the service

to lead on ensuring a clear focus on patient involvement and patient experience across the service, demonstrating both engagement and improvement

to lead on the development of quality improvement plans for the service.

Ensure that a strategy is in place to monitor clinical outcomes and reflect on this information to drive service improvement

To ensure that untoward incidents are managed using the Risk Register system, and these are escalated as required to commissioning, safeguarding, regulatory and NHS contractual bodies.

To promote, participate in and actively support the development of strategy, service developments and implementation of new clinical models, guidelines and best practice across the service

To work closely with the Hospital Director to ensure an appropriate use of staff, finance and other resources across the service, providing specific clinical advice and support as required

To promote and lead research and audit activity across the service

To lead on ongoing development of leadership capacity within the service

Knowledge, training and experience

Have achieved, through training and experience, a depth and breadth of specialist knowledge of Clinical Leadership, with a commitment for continuous professional development

Have evidence of Management and Leadership Development geared towards clinical leadership

Specialist knowledge and understanding of regulatory framework requirements

Ability to interpret relevant changes to national policies and guidelines and then to influence to ensure appropriate changes to practice and service delivery reflect these

Manage highly complex, sensitive, or contentious information and engage individuals and key governance groups around this by producing clear, sound, accurate and reasoned findings, reports, conclusions and recommendations

The ability to understand, integrate and support action in response to audit, guidelines, investigations and internal and external reviews in proportionate and fair manner

To be currently engaged in active clinical practice related to forensic mental health

To ensure student nurses on clinical placement are appropriately supervised, assessed and have an effective learning experience

An understanding of NICE guidelines relevant to patients with a diagnosis of personality disorder and complex trauma.
