Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an ambitious, patient focused Associate Dialysis Support Worker who already holds a minimum of an NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care or Clinical Support or a Registered Nurse whos NMC has lapsed.

Newport Dialysis Unit is a dynamic 30 station unit providing haemodialysis treatment for 110 patients in partnership with the NHS Trust.

As an Associate Dialysis Support Worker you will be expected to successfully complete additional NVQ Level 3 modules in Clinical Support (if required) and Dialysis which will be run in-house. Upon successful completion, you will progress to become a fully trained/qualified Dialysis Support Worker.

Main duties of the job

Responsibilities whilst undertaking training:

  • To provide general assistance to nursing staff with patient care in the treatment room
  • To liaise with transport and other departments in order to arrange appointments
  • To support the unit routine, by escorting patients to the wards, blood specimens and pharmacy errands
  • To prepare and serve patients with refreshments
  • To prepare a safe water treatment supply
  • Preparation of the clinical area
  • To maintain stocks and supplies within the treatment areas
  • To undertake housekeeping duties

Responsibilities on completion of training:

  • Preparing equipment for treatments
  • Connecting/disconnecting patients from haemodialysis including access to haemodialysis fistula/graft
  • Patient review (pre and post dialysis)
  • Documentation of all patient care delivered
  • Supporting care plans for patients
  • Ensuring the dialysis area is safe at all times
  • Manual handling of patients, including escorting to wards/transport etc
  • Safe disposal of clinical and sharps waste, recycling and general waste

Hours of work

Part time role working 23 hours per week

Long Day = 06:45 18:15

Monday to Saturday on a rotad shift system, No Sunday or night shifts

Key Responsibilities and Duties While Undergoing Supervised Training:

To develop both practical skills and theoretical knowledge in the pre and post dialysis patient assessment:-

- accurate assessment , calculation and documentation of fluid status and goal.

- accurate assessment and documentation of patients blood pressure, pulse and temperature (as required).

- to undertake and successfully complete the NVQ Level 3 modules in Clinical Support & Dialysis

To demonstrate accurate and timely patient documentation:-

- maintain accurate hourly records of treatment during dialysis.

- maintain accurate final patient evaluation post dialysis

- Ensure all work is countersigned by allocated qualified nurse on duty.

To develop both practical skills and theoretical knowledge in the AVF/AVG vascular access care of a dialysis patient:-

- to demonstrate a competent aseptic technique.

- to demonstrate a safe & efficient placement and removal of arterio-venous fistula needles.

- Associate DSW Staff are permitted to administer subcutaneous anesthetic for AVF/AVG

needle insertions.

- To demonstrate a safe blood sampling technique as per Avitum policy and procedure.

- Associate DSW Staff are not permitted to undertake care of any patients with CVC access.

To develop both competent practical skills and theoretical knowledge in the connection and disconnection care of an AVF/AVG dialysis patient:-

- to demonstrate a safe and competent dialysis access connection.

- to demonstrate a safe and competent dialysis access disconnection.

- Associate DSW Staff are not permitted to administer any Intravenous medication during

dialysis.

Preparation of the clinical area:-

- to ensure dialysis area and equipment is safe and ready for use.

- to ensure dialysis prescription data is entered correctly.

- to provide a safe and compliant disposal of clinical and general waste.

To demonstrate efficient use of dialysis consumables.

To continue expanding knowledge base and skills in relation to the care of renal patients.

To provide general support to the unit routine, escorting patients to the wards, blood specimens and pharmacy errands.

To take on the Healthcare Assistant role when required.

To work within the Avitum Policies and Procedures and adhere to the Quality Manual and Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines.
