Job summary

This temporary Bank Painter and Decorator role at Elysium Healthcare's Thornford Park facility in Thatcham, Berkshire, offers the opportunity to contribute to creating a safe, well-presented environment for individuals with complex mental health, learning disability, and autism needs. The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of painting, decorating, and maintenance tasks, working closely with the Regional Facilities Manager to ensure high-quality, timely completion of projects.

Main duties of the job

As a Bank Painter and Decorator, you will be responsible for leading all decorating tasks, properly preparing surfaces, applying paints and finishes, repairing and maintaining painted surfaces, ensuring work is completed to a high standard, assisting with material procurement, maintaining a clean and organized work area, following health and safety guidelines, and supporting the wider maintenance team as needed. You will work flexibly to suit the facility's requirements, demonstrating strong painting and decorating skills, the ability to work under pressure, and excellent customer service when interacting with service users and staff.

Working flexible hours to suit, you will turn your hand to all decorating and painting-related tasks as you work towards schedules and maintaining safe working practices when operating hand, power and workshop tools. This includes undertaking local risk assessments and following site security.

Your responsibilities will include: 

  • Leading all decorating tasks
  • Proper preparation of surfaces for painting
  • Applying paint, varnish, and other finishes using brushes, rollers, or sprayers (where risk assessed)
  • Repairing and maintaining painted surfaces, including touch-ups and refinishing
  • Ensuring all decorating work is completed to a high standard and within project timelines
  • Assisting with the selection and procurement of painting and decorating materials through the correct protocol
  • Maintaining a clean and organized work area, ensuring all tools and equipment are properly stored
  • Following health and safety guidelines to maintain a safe working environment
  • Assisting in regular checks, repairs, and maintenance of all buildings
  • Assisting the maintenance team where required and cover maintenance duties for periods of absence
  • Assisting with coordinating and chaperoning contractors on-site, completing any required paperwork

To be successful in this role, you'll need:

  • Previous experience in Painting and Decorating 
  • Face-to-face experience of dealing with people
  • Ability to work under pressure, and respond to the Regional Facilities Manager requests
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle

Where you will be working:

 Thornford Park is a 141 bed hospital set within 21 acres of Berkshire countryside, offering a seamless care pathway across medium and low secure services, psychiatric intensive care units (PICUs), and rehabilitation flats. The site supports men and women with complex Mental Health needs, Personality Disorders, Learning Disabilities, and Autism—often with histories of offending or previous placement challenges.

Services include:

  • Medium & Low Secure Units for acute and long-term care
  • PICUs for individuals in psychiatric crisis
  • Older Adult Services with age-appropriate, holistic interventions
  • Specialist Learning Disability & Autism Pathways with integrated secure settings and step-down flats

You’ll be part of a recovery-focused, multidisciplinary team helping people move safely toward greater independence. Thornford Park is easily accessible via Thatcham train station, with shuttle transport available.
