Job summary

OSR Medical Ambulance Service is seeking qualified, compassionate, caring and committed individuals to join our dedicated team on flexible working shifts, covering the North of England from our Tockwith (York) station.

The Ambulance Care Assistant (ACA) role is responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency situations and transporting patients whilst delivering high quality, professional and compassionate care.

Treating patients within the defined scope of practice, the ACA will assist the crew lead to assess every patient against the Pre-Hospital Early Warning Score. Due to the scope of practice, applicants for this role must hold a valid and in date Level 3 certificate in First Response in Emergency Care (FREC 3) or an equivalent pre-hospital care qualification deemed suitable by our training department.

An ACA will undertake PTS and Urgent Care and respond to emergency calls with a crewmate as part of a double crewed ambulance with an ECA, Technician or Paramedic.

Main duties of the job

To be able to transport patients, applicants must be over 21, hold a valid full UK manual driving licence with no more than 6 points for more than 2 years.

Applicants must have at least 2 years experience in the healthcare sector, such as health and care services.

To become an OSR Medical Ambulance Care Assistant, you'll need:

1) the ability to get on with people from all backgrounds

4) good communication skills

5) patience, sensitivity and tact

6) the ability to reassure anxious patients and explain what's happening to patients who are confused

7) quick, calm reactions in emergency situations

You also have to reassure anxious patients, gently explain the situation to patients who are confused, andgenerally treat each person in a way that enables them to keep their dignity. Sometimes, you might have to gentlypersuade patients to leave their homes, or to leave the ambulance at the end of the journey.

You might need to lift some patients from wheelchairs. Ambulance Care Assistants must be very skilled in moving andhandling techniques, using special equipment when needed.

You have to check, clean and disinfect the ambulance and restock any supplies. You have to keep up-to-date incident andpatient records.

Training

Ambulance Care Assistants have a range of training to complete. This may include moving and handling techniques, firstaid, basic patient care skills and safe driving techniques.

Rehabilitation of Offenders Act

This career is an exception to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. This means that you must supply information to anemployer about any spent or unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings, if they ask you to.

This is different from other careers, where you only have to reveal information on unspent convictions if you are asked to.

Qualifications

A valid, in date, Level 3 certificate in First Reponse in Emergency Care.

It should also help if you can show relevant skills and knowledge gained through work experience.

You must have a full manual driving licence. If you passed your test after 1996, you may need to take an extra drivingqualification in the form of a C1.
