Job summary
The role of Mental Health Act Lead is crucial to the running of Southleigh Community Hospital in ensuring patients rights are met and that the Hospital remains compliant and legal with the Mental Health Act and the Code of Practice.
Southleigh Hospital is a community mental health hospital situated in South Croydon which provides 26 assertive rehabilitation beds for male and female service users with complex mental health needs, the majority of which are detained under the Mental Health Act.
Working largely remotely with occasional office attendance, you will be in responsible for the provision of a comprehensive Mental Health Act service to the Hospital. You will be responsible for organising all Managers and Tribunal hearings and ensuring the Hospitals compliance with the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, at all times.
You must be a good, clear communicator and have the ability to deal with issues as they arise and be able to communicate with a range of different professionals both in writing and orally. An understanding of confidentiality and data protection is essential.
The ability to prioritise, work on your own initiative, show reliability, tact, flexibility and adaptability are key.
The post requires a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and training will be given on our own EPR.
Main duties of the job
ROLE PURPOSE
- To be responsible for the day to day organisational running of the Mental Health Act Legislation function, ensuring effective administrative procedures are implemented and comply with the statutory legislative responsibilities within the Mental Health Act.
- To provide support in the organisation of Judicial Tribunals in response to the Mental Health Act 1983 requirements.
- To act as a source of advice to patients, carers and other health professionals on matters relating to mental health legislation.
- Maintain and analyse of complex datasets.
DIMENSIONS
To have an understanding of the Mental Health Act 1983 including the 2007 revisions to the act.
Non-clinical information/advice to patients, carers and staff in relation to the Mental Health Act and Mental Health Legislation regarding Tribunals and Managers hearings.
Ensure the MHA Clinical spreadsheet is kept up to date with all legal and hearing information for other users within the Hospital to use.
Keep the digital and physical MHA files up to date.
Preparation and collation monthly, quarterly and annual audits as instructed by the Clinical Governance Department.
Responsible for maintaining the highly confidential legal documentation on patients status under the Mental Health Act in a secure environment.

The hospital provides 21 single en-suite bedrooms and 6 semi-independent apartments, allowing us to provide a step-down service and encourage independence.
At Southleigh Community Hospital we are keen to ensure that patients move through their care pathway as seamlessly and appropriately as possible. Our semi-independent apartments allow for people in our locked rehabilitation services to step down into a less restrictive environment when the time is right, whilst at the same time allowing us to continue to monitor whilst taking positive risks knowing that we have access to all the multi-disciplinary team if required on the same site.
