Job summary

Applications are invited for an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to take on the role of a Laboratory Manager as Maternity cover for a period of 12 months within an innovative, forward thinking private histopathology laboratory.

Cellular Pathology Services Ltd (CPS) is a thriving and growing medical laboratory that undertakes both private and NHS work.

The organisation is planning its next phase of development and is looking for an extremely driven, forward thinking experienced laboratory manager to assist with staff development, training and workflow management. Due to the expansion, there is a possibility the role may be extended and become permanent beyond the maternity cover.

The organisation undertakes a range of Histopathology testing including routine Histology, MOHS frozen sections, Immunohistochemistry, Diagnostic Cytology and a UKAS accredited digital pathology workflow.

The organisation is UKAS accredited and registered with the CQC and has IBMS training approval for pre-registration and post-registration training.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensures the highest quality services in Histopathology in a manner that optimises the growth and profitability of the Cellular Pathology Services Business through continued process improvement and best practice.
  • Work with key third party vendors to ensure delivery of operational excellence.
  • Ensure the laboratory and contracted partners comply with regulatory standards eg CQC, UKAS, and Corporate Health, Safety and Environment standards.
  • Support Business Development functions utilising broad skill base and technical knowledge.
  • Work with Directors and senior managers and their teams to ensure the needs of the business are fully met.
  • To act as a leader and mentor for the day-to-day operation of the laboratory.
  • To plan, schedule and oversee technical department operations to ensure the accurate, precise and timely testing of specimens, while achieving maximum productivity.
  • Manage the laboratory environment and equipment to the highest standards so that there are no interruptions to business activities on site and remotely.
  • Manage stock control and laboratory assets (on site and remote) in conjunction with the office manager and Business compliance executive.
  • To Liaise with the Director of Compliance for all aspects relating to regulatory compliance such as Quality management and Health & Safety
  • To be technical lead with technical expertise in lab techniques.

About us

  • CPS is UKAS accredited and IBMS approved for training at all levels.
  • The annual workload is in the region of 14,000 histology and 600 diagnostic cytology samples.
  • The purpose built lab is in Watford and undertakes routine and specialist histopathology work including an extensive range of Immunohistochemical techniques, Diagnostic Cytology and specialist MOHS frozen section work.
  • Digital Pathology has recently been added to the repertoire. Flexible working pattern is in place to cover 6:00 to 19:00 with a staff rota system in place, with Saturday working on a rota.

Job responsibilities

  • Provides oversight and direction for the day-to-day operation of the Laboratory service in consultation with Team Leaders
  • Schedule, supervise and document the operational and personnel activities of the department to ensure proper processing, testing and analysis of specimens.
  • Plan and organise departmental resources to successfully achieve established goals and objectives.
  • Organise the rota and shift system to manage the workload effectively.
  • Takes initiative to evaluate new methods and instrumentation. Performs method and equipment validation. Implements the new procedures and/or instrument.
  • Attend Operational and Quality meetings and lead for the laboratory meetings.
  • Responsible for developing, supporting and reporting data to support the business requirements.
  • Support Cost of Testing, Referral Testing and other productivity measures.
  • Reviews the quality control and quality assurance measures on a monthly basis to ensure the highest standards of good laboratory practices are achieved.
