Main duties of the job
A vacancy has arisen for a full time, HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist in our Infection Sciences Department based in Central London. Duties for this position will include helping with the daily running of the laboratory section to which you have been assigned within the Department of Infection Sciences. Additionally, you will assist in the performance of the routine diagnostic analytical work of the department as directed in order to ensure timely and accurate reporting of results. You will maintain the highest professional and technical standards in the department and lead, motivate, supervise and train staff of lower grades. The job holder will be expected to process and test patient specimens in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures by using manual, semi and fully automated laboratory methods.

Overall Job Purpose:
Investigation and analysis of patient and environmental samples by the application of
microbiological, biological, serological and gene-probe/molecular technology, utilising the most up
to date scientific methods in conjunction with traditional methods of culture, microscopy,
antigen/antibody-complex and molecular diagnostics and MALDI- TOF for microbial ID &
Undertake nucleic acid amplification technique analysis of pathogens.
The post holder will be required to work within any section of microbiology/pathology including the
high level isolation pathology laboratory. 24/7 working, weekends and bank holidays
Main Duties:
To include, but not be restricted to, the following duties:
1. Participate in all areas of laboratory bench work, whilst adhering to standard operating
procedures and participating in their regular review and update. 2. Multidisciplinary working within the HLIUPL
3. Molecular diagnostics and amplification technique analysis of pathogens including
screening of Gram negative resistance profiles
4. Communicate patients results and answer enquiries from health care professionals
providing information regarding appropriate investigations required and explanation of
results, within departmental guidelines and professional code of conduct.
5. Interpret clinical information and use scientific knowledge to process specimens for
appropriate tests, seeking advice from senior staff and clinicians when necessary.
6. Undertake specimen preparation and analysis for bacteria, fungi and parasites. This
includes preparation of stained smears, use of the microscope, antibiotic sensitivity testing,
also utilising molecular and semi and fully automated techniques and diagnostic kits.
7. Investigate environmental samples for multi drug resistant hospital acquired infections e.g.
MRSA
8. Operate and maintain analytical equipment in the department.
9. Evaluate and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using
appropriate quality control procedures.
10. Interpret complex scientific data and enter test results on pathology computer system
11. Check reports for further action by the Microbiology Clinicians.
12. Authorise reports as delegated within departmental policy.
13. Replace stocks of consumables and reagents when required and inform the Section Leader
if back-up stocks are low. 14. To assist when required in the preparation of documentation for UKAS (ISO) accreditation.
15. Able to solve complex problems within work area, but advise both clinicians and senior staff
of any clinical and managerial issues
Training and Education

2. To maintain own personal development and attend departmental meetings as required.
