Job summary

Hobbs Rehabilitation Bristol has an opening for a dynamic, driven and enthusiastic speech and language therapist, experienced in working with adults with acquired neurological conditions, to join the multidisciplinary team at the Intensive Neurotherapy centre in Pill, Bristol. Equipped with state of the art neurotechnology, Hobbs Rehabilitation Bristol is our flagship centre for exemplary interdisciplinary neurological rehabiltation.

Working alongside physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists and rehabilitation assistants, the successful speech and language therapist will deliver top quality neurorehabilitation to clients on intensive packages as well as general outpatients.

Shaping and expanding the speech therapy service at Hobbs Bristol will be a key role in this post, as will embracing the clinical application of neurotechnology, by joining the development team for MiNT - Masterclass in Neurotechnology - to assist with research and patient trials, co-designing new devices and representing MiNT and Hobbs Rehabilitation at conferences and events.

Hobbs Rehabilitation is the largest independent provider of specialist neurological rehabilitation to adults across the south of England, employing 100 staff across 8 sites. We work closely with the NHS and have several NHS contracts company-wide.

Main duties of the job

The role involves:

  • Working closely with other members of the MDT/IDT to provide the best quality holistic client-centered therapy to our clients.
  • Being professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your work.
  • Autonomously and skilfully assessing clients with acquired communication and swallowing impairments, using a range of formal and informal assessments.
  • Independently analysing assessment data and formulating client-centered goals in conjunction with the client and the MDT.
  • Creating and providing evidence based, engaging and appropriate 1:1 and group speech and language therapy interventions to clients with acquired communication and swallowing impairments.
  • Evaluating clients' progress using published outcome measures.
  • Maintaining up-to-date and accurate clinical notes using site-specific software and local procedures.
  • Writing high quality client reports, including MDT discharge reports.
  • Attending and contributing to client and family meetings.
  • Attending domiciliary visits if appropriate.
  • Attending regular local team meetings and wider SLT team meetings.
  • Contributing to the programme of in-service training and external training.
  • Building links and relationships with local universities, NHS teams, charities and other services to develop the speech therapy service.
  • Offering student placements for local SLT courses.

Specialist Speech and Language Therapist. Equivalent to NHS band 6. Part-time, with scope for increasing hours as service growth dictates.

Role

The post holder has responsibility to provide speech and language therapy for outpatients attending Hobbs Rehabilitation Bristol, as well as local community visits. To be part of the wider SLT team offering clinical, educational or administrative support where necessary. To work with the wider MDT at Hobbs Rehabilitation. To assist in the development of the SLT service at Hobbs Bristol.

Clinical

To provide speech and language therapy for adults with an acquired neurological condition, with communication and swallowing impairments.

To work independently and be accountable for own professional actions and with clinical support when required.

To manage, with support, own caseload of adults with an acquired neurological condition with communication needs and/or dysphagia in a clinically autonomous manner by assessing, diagnosing, onward referring where appropriate, managing intervention and discharging, in collaboration with the Hobbs Rehab MDT.

To develop and implement Speech and Language Therapy treatment programmes for clients with communication disorders and/or dysphagia. To be accountable for ensuring others involved in the implementation of these are trained adequately.

To communicate complex information appropriately, and to provide detailed assessment reports and deliver clear interpretation of the results to team members, other professionals, clients, carers and family members.

To be responsible for the use of specialised equipment in assessing clients with swallowing problems, for example, cervical auscultation, and the use of neurorehabilitation technology within the centre.

To work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team and to participate in specialist multidisciplinary/joint assessments and therapy sessions.

To maintain competence in assessing swallowing impairments.
