Job summary

A unique opportunity for an Assistant Psychologist (AP) has become available at Open Door Young Peoples Service. Open Door is dedicated to improving the emotional health and well-being of young people in their transition from childhood to adulthood. The current role will consist of three key elements and will allow the successful candidate to gain experience in all the core elements of the service (research, clinical, data management and admin). We are looking for a highly capable and creative AP, with a good understanding in quantitative research, data management and excellent academic writing. The successful applicant will have a key role in the coordination of a randomised control trial (RCT), clinical training development, and outcome research. This post is most suited for psychology post-graduates who wish to pursue a career in Clinical Psychology, Psychotherapy or Research Psychology. To date all our APs have been successful in obtaining a place in clinical doctorate training.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have a key role in co-ordinating an RCT investigating a parenting intervention so needs good knowledge of research methods, SPSS, excel, as well as relevant research experience and excellent academic writing skills. They will also be the administrator for the Parenting Service and work within the Young Persons Service administrative team, which requires direct patient contact. This demands both sensitivity and efficiency and can provide valuable experience in preparation for clinical training. There will be opportunities for clinical work using CBT, directly supervised by a clinical psychologist. This multifaceted role requires working flexibly as part of a team as well autonomously under their own initiative. The successful applicant must have excellent time management and interpersonal skills to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a dynamic, patient focussed service. They will also have a key role in outcome measure compliance and data monitoring.

About us

Over the past 45 years, thousands of young people aged 12-23 have turned to Open Door for help with problems including depression, anxiety, self-harm, anger, aggression, drug/alcohol misuse, eating disorders and psychosis. We offer a range of evidence-based psychological therapies including CBT, psychodynamic psychotherapy, mindfulness, EMDR and group work. Open Door also runs the Parenting Teenagers Project for parents of young people who will not seek help in their own right. We offer services from Crouch End, Tottenham, local secondary schools and online. Last year we offered over 7,000 appointments to more than 700 young people and parents/carers. Open Door is commissioned by North London NHS CCG and is one of the key providers of adolescent mental health treatment in Haringey. Open Door works closely with NHS CAMHS providers and is part of the single point of access. Other funding comes from Charitable Trusts including BBC Children in Need, Comic Relief and City Bridge Trust.

Job responsibilities

Specialist Assistant Psychologist/Clinical Research Assistant

Clinical Administrator

  • To join Open Doors highly effective frontline clinical administration team to support all aspects of the clinical service
  • To provide an efficient and effective support service for Open Doors clinical services
  • To provide office and reception administrative systems.
  • This post will provide administrative support for all clinical services within Open Door. This includes delivering the following functions:

a) Referrals, appointments and clinical administration

  • Take and process self-referrals from potential patients and referrals from all other contacts e.g. family members or professionals
  • Deal with all enquiries
  • Use of our clinical patient database
  • Correspondence and communication with patients, professionals and other contacts
  • Ensure that patients attending appointments are appropriately greeted, outcome measures are, administered, appointment status updated and the therapist informed
  • Provide additional administrative back up following an appointment if required
  • Liaison and co-operation with other administrative staff and the clinical team
  • Organisation of waiting room, resources and notice boards
  • Communicating with and having knowledge of other local services as required
  • Other general administrative tasks, such as scanning and filing

Open Door currently uses a combination of a clinical database called ClinicOffice and Microsoft Office to aid the administration of these functions and the post holder is expected to be proficient in the use of these software packages (training will be provided for ClinicOffice). We are currently implementing a tablet-based system of outcome monitoring. The post-holder will receive appropriate training and be expected to support the clinical team in implementation.

b) Information systems

  • Administration of outcome measures completed by patients at key stages in their treatment

c) Other Administrative Support

  • Responsible for opening and closing the office
  • Provide backup and support to the Administrator (Finance & Facilities)
  • Offer administrative support to additional projects where required, such as the production and distribution of Open Doors annual report, organising public events or contributing to the process of funding applications.
