Clinical Manager (Step 2) / High Intensity Therapist

Job responsibilities

Job purpose

This is a managerial role within our NHS Talking Therapies service within Surrey. The post holder will work within the NHS Talking Therapies service and manage the step 2 service provision. The post holder will work clinically at a step 3 level.

Main duties and responsibilities

Clinical

accept referrals within agreed protocols within the service

assess clients for suitability to CBT

formulate, implement and evaluate therapy programs for clients

educate and involve family members and others in therapy as necessary comparing CBT formulations with sensitivity and easily understood language

complete data agreed activity contact relating to the number of client contacts offered, and clinical sessions carried out per week in order to minimise waiting times and ensure treatment delivery remains accessible and convenient

attend multidisciplinary meetings relating to referrals for clients and treatment where appropriate

complete all requirements relating to data collection within the service

keep clear records of all clinical activity in line with service protocols

work closely with other members of the service ensuring appropriate step up and stepped down arrangements are in place to maintain a stepped care approach

assess and integrate issues surrounding work and employment into the overall therapy process and where appropriate liaise with employment advisers

Managerial

arrange and monitor work schedules for all members of step two service staff in order to provide a professional service

agree annual leave arrangements ensuring service continuity

negotiate and agree individual continuing professional development plans in consultation with the service CPP committee

participate in the annual appraisal of staff within step 2 service

participate in management meetings and liaise with other service staff to ensure service coherence

participate in management supervision

advise on resource allocation for ensuring effective service functioning

Training and Supervision

arrange and monitor supervision schedules for all members of step two service in order to provide professional service delivery

participate in the supervision of staff within the service

contribute to the teaching and training of mental health professionals and other staff as appropriate

Partnership

participate in partnership activities in line with service objectives with key partners

Research

Maintain a research orientation in line with the service strategy and participate in service research activity undertaken

Professional

ensure the maintenance of standards of practice according to the employer standards, professional and accrediting bodies (e.g., BPS, UKCP, BABCP) and keep up-to-date on new recommendations/guidelines set by the Department of Health and Care

ensure the client confidentiality is protected at all times

be aware of, and keep up-to-date with advances in the sphere of CBT

ensure clear professional objectives are identified, discussed and reviewed with service supervisor on a regular basis as part of continuing professional development

attend clinical supervision on a regular basis as agreed with the service supervisor

participate in individual performance review and deliver agreed objectives

keep up to date records in relation to continuous professional development and ensure personal development plan maintains up-to-date specialist knowledge of latest theoretical and service delivery models/developments

attend relevant conferences/workshops in line with identified professional objectives in line ensure knowledge of, and compliance with service information governance processes

maintain knowledge of, and compliance with service safeguarding policies and procedures

General

contribute to the development of best practice within the service

maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and procedures in relation to mental health and primary care services

Person Specification

Skills and Competencies

Essential

• Full range of skills and competencies as laid out in the competence framework for CBT (Roth and Pilling 2007)
• Computer literate
• Highly developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
• Has received training and carried out risk assessments within scope of practice
• Able to develop good therapeutic relationships with clients

Desirable

• Trained in provision of supervision for CBT
• Accredited with a professional psychological therapy organisation
• Completed clinical audits within a service

Experience

Essential

• Management experience within an NHS Talking Therapies service
• Demonstrable experience of working in mental health services
• Ability to meet agreed/specified service targets
• Ability to manage own caseload and time
• Demonstrates high standards in written communication
• Able to write clear reports and letters to referrers
• Experience with routine outcome monitoring

Desirable

• Worked in a service where agreed targets in place demonstrating clinical outcomes
• Experience of working with Long Term Conditions
• Experience of teaching and liaising with other professional groups

Knowledge

Essential

• Demonstrates an understanding of anxiety and depression and how it may present in Primary Care
• Demonstrates a knowledge of the issues surrounding work and the impact it can have on mental health / benefits & employment systems
• Knowledge of medication used in anxiety and depression and other common mental health problems
• Demonstrates an understanding for the need to use evidence based psychological therapies and how it relates to this post
• Knowledge of child protection issues and other relevant legislation

Training

Essential

• Good record of Continuing Professional Development and willingness to continue this

Qualifications

Essential

• Qualification from High Intensity NHS Talking Therapies course (Post Graduate Diploma) Or Equivalent:
• e.g. A doctoral level qualification in clinical or counselling psychology/ a recorded/registered qualification in one of the following - nursing, social work, occupational therapy, or a psychological therapy plus further post graduate qualification training in a psychological therapy which may be CBT or another NHS Talking Therapies appropriate evidence based therapy
• Qualified as an NHS Talking Therapies service supervisor via University based training

Desirable

• Relevant experience in Primary Care treating anxiety and depression.
