Job summary

We have an excellent opportunity for a highly self-motivated, qualified, experienced and committed multi skilled Building Maintenance Craftsperson (core duties Joiner) to join our Estates Maintenance team.

As well as having a good all-round knowledge of all traditional and modern joinery skills and techniques, you should be able to demonstrate proven sound experience in general building maintenance works.

The successful applicant will take on a key role within the organization to ensure the departments are able to maintain and enhance the general environment for the benefit of patient, visitors and staff alike.

The successful applicant will need to ensure that as a condition to remaining employed within Atlas that they must retain a current driving license as it is a crucial to the job.

The successful candidate will be required to be part of the on call system to provide an out of hours service. Please be aware that with this role you may require a DBS.

Main duties of the job

As a carpenter/joiner you may work inside or outside a building. You maintain and repair parts of buildings, mainly working with wood products.

You could be:

  • repairing damage in and around the building
  • changing locks
  • fitting fire doors
  • making and assembling on a workbench
  • hanging shelves
  • working on roof timbers

You will typically work with other estates maintenance staff including painters and decorators, plumbers, tilers, electricians and bricklayers. You will work under the direction of the estates manager. When you are working in a building, there may be staff and patients there, but you would not have direct contact with patients.

You will be part of the estates staff and may have to travel between sites in an Atlas vehicle or your own van.

Atlas joiners also work for carpentry and joinery and building companies who provide services to the NHS, such as Atlas itself.

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose and Accountabilities 1.1 Core Duties

1. Daily breakdown and day to day maintenance repairs to doors, windows, locks, door furniture etc.

2. Regular planned preventative maintenance work to fire doors, final exit doors, windows etc.

3. Regularly make and replace various general joinery items requested through the help desk system i.e. shelves, cupboards etc.

4. Occasionally carry out new works on minor schemes, make and fix door and window frames, fix skirting architrave units and work stations.

5. Daily use of woodworking machines and the production, manufacture and assembly of joinery items.

6. Daily use of craft hand tools associated with own trade.

7. Occasional minor glazing work.

8. The safe erection and use of tower scaffolding, ladders and steps for own work. Responsible for checking and authorizing own ladders and safety harnesses. (subject to training)

9. Daily driving the company vehicles around Atlass footprint area e.g. Lancaster / Morecambe / Blackpool area.

10. Regular operation of the key cutting machine

11. Awareness of ligature points and regular check for ligature points when carrying out work on window curtain rails and cubical tracking.

12. Daily responsibilities for good housekeeping ie cleaning and tidying of the woodworking machine shop and the security of the machines.

13. Occasionally requested to work overtime at short notice.

14. Willingness to participate in cross trade flexibility

15. Report faults and defects In relation to own work area and the reporting of defects to tools and access equipment.

16. Responsible for the safe keeping of tools, equipment chemicals and flammable liquids. To keep tools materials etc. locked and secure when outside the observable work area.

17. Responsible for keeping the work area clear, tidy and in a safe condition. To practice good housekeeping at all locations within the community.

18. To observe safe working methods to avoid injury to personnel or damage to equipment

19. Responsible for health and safety, access and security when working in locked wards, health premises and mental health locations.

20. To comply with all Atlass policies and procedures.

21. To be conversant with local health and safety rules, local risk assessments, facilities health and safety handbook, fire safety rules, evacuation procedures and local COSHH register.

22. Supervision of multi-trade work on minor improvement schemes carried out by direct labour or contractors.
