Ventnor Medical Practice are looking for a Prescription Co-ordinator

The main purpose of this role is to assist our clinical and management team, patients, local pharmacies, and other members of the primary healthcare teams with ensuring patients repeat medication is produced within the current protocols of the practice.

Main duties of the job

To act as a focal point of communication between the GPs, Patient Advisors, nurses, management staff, patients and local pharmacies as well as other members of the primary health care team to ensure patients repeat medication is produced within the current protocols of the surgery.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Prescription Co-Ordinator. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.

The Prescription Co-Ordinator is responsible for:

a) To process (in conjunction with other nominated administrative staff), all repeat medication requests sent in by patients received by email, post, slips and the online access system, in accordance with practice protocol

b) Generate requests for medication on behalf of the patient for non-repeat items

c) Add, amend, remove medications as per discharge summaries

d) To liaise with patients and pharmacies regarding queries and requests

e) To promote good relationships with local pharmacies

f) To ensure repeat medication is issued in line with the protocols that are already in place, and where queries are raised that they are dealt with in an efficient and timely manner (within a 5 working day timeframe)

g) To ensure that patient queries on medication are highlighted to the relevant GP

h) On a regular basis, to go through uncollected prescriptions, to remove the details from the patient records and then destroy the prescription

i) To update the practices Repeat Prescribing Protocol as necessary and at least annually

j) To train all new nursing and administrative staff, GP locums and GP registrars on the use of the prescribing module within the practices clinical system

k) To work closely with the practice support pharmacist, assisting the practice to meet local CCG targets

l) To act on incoming drug alerts by running searches as appropriate and liaising with GP prescribing lead to ensure that any necessary action is taken in an efficient and timely manner

m) To organise and attend prescribing meetings with repeat prescription staff and GP prescribing lead as deemed necessary, ensuring that all agreed actions are carried out

n) To report problems with repeat prescribing to the management team or GP lead for prescribing

o) To actively assist in the investigation of significant events which involve an error in the repeat prescribing process

p) To make recommendations to the management team and/or GP lead for prescribing to streamline and improve repeat prescribing processes

q) To ensure prescriptions are in line with local formulary.

r) To help with achieving prescribing targets and facilitating medication reviews.

s) To complete FP34 returns each month.
