Job summary
The sexual health services in Herefordshire are expanding and as a result, we are excited to be advertising for a lead nurse to provide day to day clinical support and management to the sexual health nursing team with the support of the sexual health service manager. The successful candidate will be trained in contraception and sexual health, delivering nurse led clinics, providing training, education and clinical supervision to members of the team and the wider sexual health partnership.
The role will also require safeguarding leadership for the service, representing the clinic at safeguarding meetings and providing a link for external colleagues to share and access information. You will cultivate a culture of outreach and shared learning, growing and promoting established partnership working and support integrated ways of working with other healthcare providers including GPs, practice nurses, school nursing team, education and independent sector provider. Alongside our experienced medical and nursing team you’ll provide clinical nurse leadership for contraception, assessment, and treatment of STIs.
The post holder would be expected to have a nurse prescribing qualification or be experienced in working to PGD’s and be willing to train as a non-medical prescriber.
Main duties of the job
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical
To offer a high standard of confidential, sensitive and non-judgemental contraceptive and sexual health nursing care within the clinic setting respecting the cultural beliefs and practices of the local population.
To inform and advise patients about methods of contraception, the detection of sexually transmitted infections and risk reduction
To triage clients
To perform clinical examinations as appropriate. To interpret the findings of history and examination and liaise with medical team as necessary.
Client history taking
to recognise signs and symptoms of STI’s and prescribe / dispense treatment appropriately.
To record and perform an asymptomatic or symptomatic sexual health screening of male and female patients.
To carry out partner notification, interpret and discuss with patients the results of sexual health screens
To conduct microscopy and make STI diagnoses.
To perform venepuncture and point of care testing on patients
To work flexible hours including early mornings, occasional Saturdays and evenings. To work across outreach locations when required within the borough of Hereford.
Managerial
To line manage a share of the sexual health nursing team and provide professional leadership
To work with the Service Manager to ensure appropriate staffing levels are in place to reflect changing workload demands
To manage the staff rota for your team and cover for other teams
To demonstrate leadership and teaching skills in the supervision and development of junior staff
To work with the Service Manager in the recruitment and selection of nursing staff.
To be part of the regular appraisal process of nursing staff within the team.
To actively engage with local and national organisations in developing and advancing nursing practice.
To promote, plan, implement and evaluate a programme of clinical supervision for nurses in the team.
To support the Service Manager and deputise their absences as required.
Service and Practice Development
To ensure that any managerial, professional practice and service developments are implemented effectively within the team.
To actively contribute to the development and implementation of the locality clinical governance plan and objectives.
To inform the Service Manager of any changes in service need and assist where possible to address the changing need.
To participate in the recording of relevant information for monitoring contact activity, evaluating team activities and other data required.
To motivate and lead the nursing team in developing a professionally accountable and responsible approach to nursing practice, by acting as an exemplar role model.
Education & Research
To keep up to date on clinical and professional developments in line with evidence-based practice; to share knowledge with other team members where appropriate.
To facilitate the development and structuring of the clinic as a learning Environment
To undertake training analysis and implementation teaching programmes as appropriate
To be responsible for Induction, training and continuing education nursing staff, of agency, bank and students.
To take an active part in the development and implementation of nursing clinical audit.
To demonstrate a commitment to advances in nursing/clinical practice in research and implementing evidence-based practice.
To take every reasonable opportunity to maintain and improve own professional knowledge and competence.
To take an active role in the identification and facilitation of the educational needs of junior members of staf
To participate in the Service’s professional and clinical development activities and to support other team members with these activities.
