Join us as we are currently looking for a motivated, dedicated and enthusiastic Bank Healthcare Assistant join our busy and diverse Outpatients Department. You will support a wide range of duties due to the complexity of services offered at HMT Sancta Maria Hospital. Main duties of the job

As a healthcare assistant, you will be responsible for assisting and caring for patients in a fast-paced and dynamic clinical environment. The role of the health care support worker is to support the nurse with the highest standards of nursing care, ensuring patient safety and supporting the patients pre and post operatively. Part of the role will include changing dressings, taking vital signs, and ensuring each patient has a comfortable and safe experience.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

To undertake duties in relation to patient care and departmental administration/organisation with direction and supervision from a Registered Nurse.

To work as a member of the multidisciplinary departmental team providing excellence of customer service to patients and their relatives.

Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients and their relatives and within the departmental team.

To demonstrate behaviour and attitudes appropriate to a professional working environment and which promotes the ethos of the Hospital Management Trust and Sancta Maria Hospital.

To be adaptable, flexible and responsive to the changing needs of the hospital.

To be committed to own personal development and the undertaking of NVQ Level 2 in Care.

PURPOSE:

1. At all times treat patients, visitors and colleagues with dignity and respect, maintaining confidentiality and delivering a service which meets customer needs and satisfaction.

2. To work in a collaborative and co-operative manner with all members of the care team, observing at all times operational policy and procedure requirements.

3. To assist the Registered Nurses in the delivery of direct and indirect patient care and treatment as requested, performing duties in a courteous, sympathetic and professional manner and ensuring that no action or omission on your part is detrimental to the condition, safety, well-being and interest of the patients.

4. To assist and support patients in essential care needs, providing a high quality of personalised care, having regard for individuals' religious and cultural customs and beliefs.

5. At all times maintaining accurate and timely communication and documentation, contributing to daily reports of patient activity and progress and actively reporting any difficult or problematic aspects of patient care delivery to a Registered Nurse.

6. To promote a safe working environment at all times, assisting in the safe use and maintenance of equipment, reporting untoward occurrences in line with hospital policies and procedures and informing a Registered Nurse of any behaviour by others which is perceived to be harmful, violent, aggressive, derogatory or discriminating of others.

7. To demonstrate commitment to training and development by taking every reasonable opportunity to maintain and update knowledge, competence and skill and assisting new members to the team by demonstrating own duties in a professional manner.

8. Always acknowledge any self limitations of competence in accepting assigned direct patient care activities by informing a Registered Nurse.

9. The principle duties of this job description should only be undertaken after training assessment and competency to the related tasks have been met.

NUTRITION:

Assisting patients to eat and drink.

MOBILITY:

Assist and encourage mobility in dependant patients.

Escort patients to theatre/X-Ray under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

HYGIENE:

Assist patient to undertake oral hygiene.

Assist patient with/undertake the cleaning of teeth/dentures.

Assist patient with/undertake care of hair

Removal of anti-embolic stockings - skin inspection daily

Assist patient with/undertake bed bath/shower/bath

Assist patient with/undertake undressing/dressing

General tidying of patients room including making bed

ELIMINATION:

Assist/carry out catheter toilet

Assist patient to use appropriate toilet facilities.

Changing clothing/bedding and cleaning of skin if patient incontinent

Measure and chart urine as appropriate

MAINTAINING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT:

Ensure equipment is clean and well maintained and report any repairs required.

Identify hazards within the patient working environment and report to a Registered Nurse.

Wash and dry commodes after each patient use.

Clean up spillages, wash and dry beds/tables/lockers in absence of housekeeping staff.

Prepare the room for the patient, post theatre.

Chaperone the patient, as required, with the RMO/Consultant.

EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING:

Contribute to the emotional support of patients who may be anxious, upset, frightened or worried for any reason.

CONTRIBUTE TO THE REGISTERED NURSE'S ASSESSMENT OF A PATIENT BY UNDERTAKING THE FOLLOWING OBSERVATIONS AND REPORTING FINDINGS TO THE REGISTERED NURSE:- Patient weight Patient height Temperature Pulse

ADMINSTRATION/ORGANISATION:

COMMUNICATION:

Answering telephone, taking messages and referring calls, as appropriate, and adhering to confidentiality requirements.

Participate in departmental meetings

Communicating with patients about time of theatre/tests, etc., at the request of a Registered Nurse.

Participate in discussions over evaluating care delivered with the Registered Nurse.

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, document care as and when required, using the appropriate documentation.

Assist the Ward Clerk in obtaining patients' records and maintenance of patients' notes.

In conjunction with the Ward Clerk, carry out clerical duties necessary for the admission, transfer and discharge of patients.

Support positive team working and participate in the maintenance of a clean, tidy and healthy environment.
