Job summary

Exciting opportunities have arisen for Nursing Associates to join us at Newham Health Collaborative

The Nursing Associate will work under the direct supervision of the Clinical Services Manager/ Lead Practice Nurses strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols. They will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care. There are both full time and part time options available.

The purpose of the Nursing Associate role in General Practice is to support the delivery of core services in a cost effective way.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work with people of all ages, in a variety of settings in health and social care. The role contributes to the core work of nursing, freeing up registered nurses to focus on more complex clinical care.

The post holder will be: 

  • Registered Nursing Associate on the NMC register
  • Possess Nursing Associate foundation degree qualification
  • Trained to provide and monitor care for patients

Nursing associates will follow the same code of conduct as well as rules for revalidation, maintaining the same standards of conduct and behaviour demanded of the registered Nurse.

About us

Newham Health Collaborative Ltd (NHC) is a GP federation representing all the GP practices within the Newham borough boundaries. This covers a population of approximately 400,000 patients. We are established as a limited company, wholly owned by our 45 GP practice members.

Job responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities:

Following appropriate training and competency the following competency based skills maybe undertaken by qualified nursing associates working within general practice:

  • Adult and child Immunisation under PSD
  • Live nasal flu vaccines under PSD
  • Travel vaccines under PSD
  • Shingles vaccine under PSD
  • Pneumococcal vaccine under PSD
  • B12
  • Cervical Screening - Following Public health guidance on training requirements undertake the role of cervical sample taker
  • Wound management including chronic wounds and wound clinics
  • Suture/clip removal
  • Taking of ECGs
  • Phlebotomy including home visits if with the correct indemnity and car insurance etc
  • Monitoring of long term condition - QOF related with complex patients referred to registered nurse
  • Nebulisers if prescribed
  • Provide a leadership role for healthcare support workers
  • Lead and participate in clinical and non-clinical audit
  • New patient health checks
  • Spirometry
  • Chaperoning duties
  • Home visits
  • Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/Nurses
  • Sterilising, cleansing and maintenance of equipment
  • Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
  • Surgical equipment and vaccine re-stocking and stock rotation
  • Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms
  • Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations

  • Provide holistic, compassionate, safe and effective care and support to patients, their families and service users in a range of care settings under the direction of a Registered Nurse, without direct supervision in line with an agreed plan of care

  • Safely administer medication in accordance with local and national guidance

  • Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transport arrangements
