Job responsibilities
Establishes, maintains and nurtures proactive collaborative relationships with and between front line clinical and operational staff providing critical care, across disciplines, in all NWL acute sites;
Is accountable for managing the NWL Network function leading support to the Network Joint clinical forum activities and sustaining mutual growth and peer support within and between units and services in a range of acute Trusts within and between networks;
Provides nursing leadership and support to the established operationalized education and training programme for critical care transfers in NWL
Offers practical support to ensure transfer teams can be populated with transfer trained staff and that transfer safety continues within and external to trusts. (NOTE this is not being covered by transfer service host trust RBHT and is a sector wide function with nurse practice educators taking lead roles)
Supervises the Network wide clinical audit and transfer data and reporting.
Provides senior nursing leadership, subject matter, clinical and operational service and delivery expertise in relation to the management and care of acutely unwell, critically ill or injured adult patients for the Network and ICS in NWL;
Is a lead clinical member of the critical care programme delivery team within the NWL ICS virtual structure covering health care in NWL.
Will identify opportunities, review and gain support and adapt complex inter and intra organisational patient pathways and negotiate change within organisations;
Will facilitate and support the development and bedside implementation of benchmarked cross organisational, clinical and operational guidelines for critical care patients across NWL and (London for some)
is hosted in the NWL ICB currently
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Ensure the Network functions effectively, and that initiatives have support and engagement from the critical care community, and nursing in particular by:
Ensuring Network functionality through structure, membership and developing and implementing efficient business process including decision making and clinical audit and support building the cross ICS critical care programme /Network team functionality;
Deliver a high standard of Network information and communication through timely agendas, reporting, and analysis at meetings, though workshops, via Network publications, and via large sharing events as allowed;
Designing, developing and implementing project processes and mechanisms to deliver the Network activities and additional projects that arise in year ensuring the appropriate clinical groups are engaged;
Ensuring the Network has a high profile for effective working and delivering solutions by regular communications with external stakeholders within London and beyond;
Act as external advisor for cross Trust clinical serious untoward incident reviews
Transfer training Support the maintenance of transfer training across the patch
Ensure inter organisational critical incidents affecting critical care patients are reported appropriately, investigated by the responsible organisations, learning is identified and facilitating roll out of learning across the network using a variety of methods including critical incident training and review.
Influence national critical care and the acutely unwell / enhanced care patient agenda under development via system, professional and statutory processes to facilitate appropriate application in north West London ;

oCompiling the Network / host Delivery MOU
oWriting the annual report
oCompiling the ring fence account of income and spend to NHSE/I
oraise invoicing for NHSE/I income of £164 k per annum and other network income for specific projects and provide evidence to comply with any NHSE/I requirements
Critical Care Strategy
To provide senior clinical nursing input and delivery in coordinating the development, implementation and review of critical care strategy by:
Ensuring effective working relationships and links are identified, developed, used and maintained with managerial and clinical colleagues in the Network, across professional and organisational boundaries in the ICS framework and in London including NHSE/I and Health Education England in London
Facilitation of effective cross-boundary collaboration and service development through the provision of virtual infrastructure, communication and support processes across the network;
Providing expert input, identifying evidence, devising mechanisms and delivering practical support to implement the redesign of identified acute patient cross organisational pathways;
Facilitating trusts in modernising and improving critical care services by providing diagnostic and improvement expertise;
Providing co-ordinated input to education and training consortia and reviewing staff critical care training and welfare needs
Leadership & Clinical responsibilities
To be a role model for current and future clinical practitioners.
Lead on and influence nursing staff in their commitment to advancing nursing/clinical practice through the use of research and implementing evidence based practice
Provide expert advice regarding nursing staff and other professionals, supporting compliance with NMC regulation and professional code of conduct.
proactively facilitate practice that is both professionally enabling and patient focused. This should be translated where possible across professional boundaries to optimise health outcomes.
Work with the multidisciplinary team to review clinical practice and develop new clinical initiatives that support innovation in NWL.
Provide a strategic approach to the development and improvement of clinical care and quality, to enhance the production of relevant clinical benchmarks and other quality initiatives.
Provide professional leadership, and a highly visible and critical best friend presence to support others to deliver the nursing audit, service and practice improvement agendas, and to meet the nursing quality elements of practice
To deputise for the lead Director of Nursing supporting the ICS critical care programme (where appropriate ) in the ICS critical care role.
Provide support, expertise and intelligence across sites with regards to safe staffing levels on nursing workforce related matters as detailed in national guidance and initiatives regarding critical care, in peacetime and in surge and extreme surge
Advise on acuity and dependency data that is available, and cross relate to environments in multiple sites to inform on safe staffing, service delivery and development to support management of risk
To influence others in choosing, implementing and evaluating appropriate strategies in relation to internal, national and international nursing practice.
To provide and demonstrate sound clinical leadership, develop support mechanisms and evaluate methods for sharing good practice. Leading innovation in on-going nursing development.
Networking / Relationships with other networks
Actively foster productive working relationships with other networks, sharing best practice, local benchmarking and work streams where relevant and appropriate .
Continue to nurture current relationships with other ODN/network directors and managers, clinical directors, professional leads and others.
Foster a working environment that encourages team work, facilitates growth in individuals maximises individual contribution and stimulates innovation.
