Job summary

This is an exciting time to be working for the benefit of and to support the safe management of critically ill or injured and acutely unwell adults in North West London. After operating at unprecedented levels for sustained periods during the Covid pandemic increased the focus of attention on critical care services it is important to build on the enhanced system working and embed improvements delivered. Recognised as essential to the delivery of safe acute care, covering elective and unplanned settings, there are now national and local work streams for critical care services. These include capacity and demand, workforce, staff welfare, surge planning, standards, education and training, estates & facilities and activity and payment reforms.

This is a Network role it involves trusted, practical interactions at a granular level on every hospital site in NWL, and soft power, honest broker methodology. Direct colleagues and stakeholders will be across NWL and beyond.

The post requires a high level of self-directed thinking and ability for meaningful detailed engagement with, and at times, respectful challenge of senior clinicians in multiple professions.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will build on strong NWL Critical Care Network foundations with this post offering the chance to lead the Network function and provide senior nursing leadership and subject matter expertise to the integrated care system (ICS) critical care service and patient care developments and delivery for the future. This includes:

strong clinical participation in health system wide, cross site collaboration;

working across the traditional divides of commissioning and provider interests;

Supporting innovation and delivery of best practice / safe care for acutely unwell or injured patients including enhanced care models for medical or surgical patients, critical care outreach supporting sicker ward patients and post ICU discharges, as well as patient care delivered in defined and designated intensive care and high dependency units.

Optimising access / egress to appropriate levels of care for elective and unplanned emergency patients.

As the NHS adapts to optimise patient care and capacity more effectively in a peri-covid world, this role is both a linchpin and a catalyst in transitioning key legacy network operational work, front line involvement and mutual aid within the wider, essential and strategic NWL ICS critical care programme delivery.

Establishes, maintains and nurtures proactive collaborative relationships with and between front line clinical and operational staff providing critical care, across disciplines, in all NWL acute sites;

Is accountable for managing the NWL Network function leading support to the Network Joint clinical forum activities and sustaining mutual growth and peer support within and between units and services in a range of acute Trusts within and between networks;

Provides nursing leadership and support to the established operationalized education and training programme for critical care transfers in NWL

Offers practical support to ensure transfer teams can be populated with transfer trained staff and that transfer safety continues within and external to trusts. Supervises the Network wide clinical audit and transfer data and reporting.

Deliver a high standard of Network information and communication through timely agendas, reporting, and analysis at meetings, though workshops, via Network publications, and via large sharing events as allowed;

Designing, developing and implementing project processes and mechanisms to deliver the Network activities and additional projects that arise in year ensuring the appropriate clinical groups are engaged;

Ensuring the Network has a high profile for effective working and delivering solutions by regular communications with external stakeholders within London and beyond;

Act as external advisor for cross Trust clinical serious untoward incident reviews

Transfer training Support the maintenance of transfer training across the patch
