Job summary

Main duties of the job

A dynamic and motivated leader, you will work across multiple partners and sectors to strategically a lead the health and care staff and volunteers strand of the West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership Suicide Prevention Strategy 2022- 2027.

You will form positive relationships with workforce, HR, organisational development, leaders, operational managers and others right across health and care in order to support them to establish, develop and embed suicide prevention strategies and plans. This will include the development and delivery of a significant number of high quality and bespoke training packages, as well as the coordination of the WY Suicide Prevention training network.

You will contribute to the delivery of the other strands of the strategy, helping us achieve our zero suicide ambition for West Yorkshire. You will bring an understanding of health inequalities and the impact of the wider determinants of health, and the life course approach to this work.

You will be working in a fast-paced environment handling sensitive and upsetting information, and will work with team and employer to keep well.

You will work in a complex, and changing system-wide team of health and social care organisations, which includes NHS Trusts, local authorities, voluntary sector organisations, including people with lived experience.

You will be an integral part of the Improving Population Health Programme Team, reporting to the Suicide Prevention Project Manager and working alongside the Suicide Prevention Project Officer. You will develop strong working relationship with System and Leadership Team in the WY Health and Care Partnership.

You will be working in a fast-paced environment handling sensitive and upsetting information, and will work with team and employer to keep well.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Communications & Relationship Skills

1.1 Establish and proactively maintain constructive relationships and two-way communication with key internal and external stakeholders in order to devise and deliver a broad partnership-building strategy and plan to

Enable external organisations to prevent staff and volunteer suicide

Facilitate greater understanding of Suicide Prevention and the delivery of the WY Suicide Prevention Strategy

Encourage collaboration and shared learning

Celebrate achievements and good practice

Promote positive mental health, challenge stigma

Combat health inequalities through understanding the wider determinants of health

1.2 Develop and deliver suicide prevention training in a clear, engaging and high quality manner, gaining feedback from attendees and using it to continuously improve.

1.3 Communicate sensitive, complex and distressing information, and have the confidence to support people who have lived experience of suicide.

1.4 Support the use of a locally developed suicide prevention employer toolkit.

1.5 Support organisations across the partnership and beyond to develop and implement their own bespoke suicide prevention plans and strategies.

1.6 Develop existing relationships with the staff mental health and wellbeing hub, systems leadership team, People Board and other teams across the Integrated Care Board.

1.7 Engage and enthuse others, promoting a shared understanding of the wide variety of organisations, services and projects that support suicide prevention across West Yorkshire to enable the emerging WY HCP to learn from them, and for them to work more effectively together.

1.8 Convene and develop the existing staff suicide prevention network, enabling members who work right across the health and care system to lead and develop their suicide response strategies. Develop the network as a means to highlight key news, develop training, and share resources across health and care organisations.

1.9 Produce and promote a range of high quality training materials, documents and literature.

1.10 Work with people with lived experience of suicide bereavement and suicide attempts.

1.11 Foster the development of compassionate workplace cultures.

2 Analytical & Judgmental Skills

2.1 Ability to use own judgement in supporting organisations, partners and individuals in a highly sensitive and triggering subject matter.

2.2 Make autonomous decisions on the best approach to the delivery of staff suicide prevention work, or most appropriate action if e.g. the most appropriate marketing communications tactics for specific groups, including teams with lived experience of a colleague taking their own life.

2.3 To understand and interpret suicide data and facts and convey these to different audiences, including keeping appraised of Office National Statistics dataset regarding suicide and employment, as well as academic research and distilling into bitesize recommendations, and persuading and supporting systems colleagues to implement them.

2.4 To analyse and assess complex facts, including conflicting information, using appropriate qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, for example by conducting surveys and qualitative interviews about staff experience of suicide at work and/or at home and then making recommendations to system partners about how to change and/or improve workplace culture or practice.

2.5 Develop appropriate and secure data management practices by adhering to legislation, regulations and local policy including in the processing of sensitive data.

2.6 Ensure learning and feedback from the network feeds into the Suicide Prevention Oversight Group and Improving Population Health Boards of the WY HCP.

2.7 Appropriately escalate, discuss and triangulate with team and leaders.

3. Planning & Organisational Skills

3.1 Take ownership of self and others, including external/internal stakeholders in the management of staff suicide prevention work, being prepared to be held accountable for delivery.

3.2 Planning the programme of work across the fixed term period for this post, and working with colleagues to organise and deliver outcomes within the time frame.

3.3 Proactively collect and manage evidence of activities.

3.4 Manage time and prioritisation of a busy workload effectively, including delivering written and verbal reports to senior leaders and boards or networks.

3.5 Organise, capture, disseminate, and report key information to project stakeholders for further monitoring and evaluation.

3.6 Planning and advocating for the delivery of suicide prevention training.

3.7 Developing and delivering staff suicide prevention network.

3.11 Lead specialist for own area, able to work to own initiative, on a specific project or area, deliver outcomes with a managed approach, providing timely updates to managers as required.
