We are looking for healthcare professionals who are registered with the NMC or HCPC and who have experience of supporting learners and their supervisors in practice.

NHS Dorset are proud to be a part of delivering and leading on a variety of projects aimed at supporting and developing our future and existing workforce across our Integrated Care System, including clinical placement expansion, preceptorship, return to practice, trainee nursing associates and registered nurse degree apprenticeships.

We are able to offer an exciting opportunity to join us in our diverse and dynamic ICS Workforce Delivery Team.

You will work closely with partners across the NHS and will work alongside registered staff and learners, offering a range of development opportunities to meet learning needs and increase the quality placement offer, and enhance learner experience in Dorset.

Main duties of the job

This is a secondment opportunity (subject to employer agreement) for a minimum of 12 months (fixed term will be considered) and could be part of a joint role / portfolio.

In order to be successful in this position, you will need to have proven experience of clinical practice and supporting learners and supervisors. A professional registration for Nursing or AHP is essential as is an assessors qualification or experince of supervising learners. You must be able to demonstrate excellent communication and facilitation skills, be able to multi task and prioritise workload whilst providing high level support to a variety of partners within Dorset ICS.

You will be passionate about learning and education and supporting the development of our workforce across Dorset ICS.

This role will be based in West Moors and travel to other sites across Dorset may be required. Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions you will be required to work in a flexible manner including remotely. The Our Dorset Workforce Development Team and Primary Care Training Hub support acute, primary care, community and social care providers within Dorset along with external partners such as education providers and Health Education England. The priority areas of support include placement expansion, workforce planning, recruitment and retention and education and development of new roles.

JOB PURPOSE

To positively support, influence and improve the quality of the learning environment predominately in primary and social care settings by providing support, supervision, educational and professional development opportunities for practice assessors, supervisors, students, qualified health care professionals and support workers within the practice setting.

To scope placement capacity and capability for establishing and increasing placement opportunities for student nurses and AHPs in primary and social care.

To work as part of the team delivering and leading on a variety of projects aimed at supporting and developing our future and existing workforce, including preceptorship, return to practice, trainee nursing associates and registered nurse degree apprenticeships.

POST SPECIFIC, TASKS AND OBJECTIVES

STRATGEY AND DEVELOPMENT

  • To work as part of the team delivering and leading on nursing and AHP placement expansion and quality learning environments within primary and social care.
  • To lead on enhancing the learning environment by ensuring quality control mechanisms are in place, taking appropriate action when areas for development are identified.
  • Developing learning opportunities for assessors and learners is a major job responsibility by delivering in house courses, designing information/learning packages; provide contemporary specialist advice on areas of new developments in clinical practice and best practice initiatives for both professional and vocational learning. Facilitating work-based shadowing, coaching and peer supervision.
  • Contribute to enhancing the quality of the learning environment by being the allocated lead professional undertaking audit of the practice environment; maximising the number of appropriately skilled supervisors / assessors within clinical settings whilst maximising the number of students and learners who can be effectively supported within these settings and making appropriate action plans to resolve areas of concern, and escalating unresolved issues to the appropriate responsible professional.
  • Lead education activities related to all learners within the system to include design and delivery of local workshops for assessor and supervisors utilising and developing a variety of delivery involving external education providers such as local colleges and universities where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the expansion of Nursing Associates and Registered Nurse Degree Apprentices within the Primary and Social Care workforce, by supporting learners and their supervisors in line with workforce plans.
  • Lead on the production of programmes and their delivery in skills interventions where necessary that enhance the learning experience.
  • Implementation and maintenance of Learning Contracts, to ensure staff comply with course requirements, attendance and completion in order to minimise attrition rates and maintain contractual arrangements and funding streams.

COMMUNICATION

  • Optimise and maximise placement capacity by maintaining supervisor and assessor records and audit information. Analysis of data such as student activity, assessor availability and workforce redesign and coordinating allocation of student placements in partnership with the HEI.
  • Contribute to standards in the practice environment through the application of specialist knowledge in education and development.
  • Utilising prior knowledge and experience to develop learning opportunities for staff in the form of student and assessor support.
  • Provide expert support and advice to assessors and learners in the workplace by providing professional guidance regarding development of knowledge and practice and potentially supporting the assessment of learners.
  • Lead education activities related to multi professional level involving universities and other external providers.
  • Support the development of education and development policies through participation in joint working events involving the employer, NHS Trusts, University, Further Education and vocational providers.
  • Through ones own continuing professional development and learning, provide best practice advice to all learners to support governance and patient care.
  • Ensuring public protection by providing expert support and guidance to assessors making complex and sensitive decision-making in respect of student placement, competence or fitness to practice.
  • Support the process of reviewing complex placement/programme evaluation and ensuring information is shared with practice partners and action plans formulated and to provide comprehensive written reports of data analysis and recommendations for improvement and further development.

HUMAN RESOURCES/ WORKFORCE

  • To engage with regular management supervision and identify own learning/developmental needs to inform a Professional Development Plan.
  • To support the ongoing continuous professional development of all staff members throughout the system where directed, through the dissemination of expert knowledge of in-house and external learning and development opportunities.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

  • To undertake research in relation to development of practice placement opportunities, increases in availability and quality assurance by carrying out audit of the practice environment within the Trust.
