Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Primary
Care Cancer Lead for Wessex Cancer Alliance and Dorset Integrated Care System
(ICS). The post holder will provide primary care clinical leadership and
expertise on the development of all cancer services in Dorset and will be
jointly responsible for the delivery of the Wessex Cancer Alliance Primary Care
Strategy.
The Dorset ICS Cancer Programme, in partnership
with Wessex Cancer Alliance, is planned and delivered by a proactive and
innovative team. Enabled by the Dorset Integrated Care System; the post holder
will have opportunities to deliver tangible improvements to patient experience
and cancer survival in Dorset.
The Cancer Programme contributes to two of the
new Dorset Integrated Care Partnership five year plan priorities - to increase
the number of healthy life years for the Dorset population, and to reduce the
gap in life expectancy between least and most deprived areas; the post holder
will provide leadership towards achieving these aims and those of the NHS Long
Term Plan for cancer and the National Cancer Alliance Plan.
Main duties of the job
Supporting the Dorset Integrated
Care Board Planned Care Clinical Lead, the post holder will work closely with Wessex
Cancer Alliance colleagues and the Clinical Leads within each Dorset ICS member
organisation to provide visibility, leadership and develop the interface
between primary and secondary/tertiary care for people with cancer and their
families. They will provide clinical leadership to the delivery of cancer
elements of the long term plan for Wessex, with specific focus on primary care
across all five areas of work within the Cancer Alliance, namely earlier
diagnosis, faster diagnosis, treatment, personalised care and workforce
transformation.
The post holder will be an
active member of the Dorset ICS Cancer Programme Steering Group and Wessex
Cancer Alliance Board; and will chair or co-chair a number of groups to take
forwards planning and delivery of the primary care and earlier diagnosis strategy.
This appointment is for a GP for two sessions
per week at a rate of £330 per session until March 31st 2025 (with
potential opportunity to extend). The role is flexible but a commitment to
attend Wessex Cancer Alliance and national meetings is required.

The post holder will be a key member of
the Wessex Cancer Alliance Board and represent primary care at the Dorset ICS
Cancer Programme Steering Group. The post holder will also co-chair the Dorset
ICS Cancer Programme Clinical Advisory Group (CAG).
The
post holder will be required to support the joint Chairs of the Dorset ICS
Cancer Programme and work closely with the NHS Dorset Head of Service for
Cancer, contribute to relevant briefings and act as the primary care clinical
ambassador in relation to cancer for Dorset and Wessex at local, regional and
national meetings.
Post specific, tasks and objectives
- Providing and championing
clinical leadership
- Provide primary care clinical leadership
and expertise on the development of cancer services in Dorset and be jointly
responsible (with the HIOW primary care lead) for the delivery of the WCA
Primary Care Strategy and the leadership of the primary care cancer team.
- Provide leadership for the other Dorset
Wessex Cancer Alliance GPs.
- Provide clinical leadership to the
delivery of the cancer elements of the long term plan for Wessex, with specific
focus on primary care across all five areas of work within the Cancer Alliance,
namely earlier diagnosis, faster diagnosis, treatment and care, personalised
care and workforce transformation.
- Be an active member of the Dorset ICS
Cancer Programme Steering Group and Wessex Cancer Alliance Board.
- Co-chair the Wessex Cancer Alliance
primary care meeting, working closely with WCA HIOW primary care lead to
deliver the aims of the WCA Primary Care strategy.
- Co-ordinate and contribute towards an
ongoing programme of cancer education and engagement in primary care.
- Chair the Dorset primary care cancer
meeting to facilitate delivery of the primary care agenda for cancer
- Remain up to date with NICE guideline
NG12 and provide clinical advice as to any changes to the guidance and impact
on patients and referral pathways.
- Support the redesign of services ensuring
robust clinically effective pathways that are clear and fit for scrutiny
through the validation and consultation process.
- Provide cancer updates to Dorset PCN
clinical director meeting (approx. quarterly)
- Provide support to Dorset PCNs for
delivery of PCN DES and any locally funded early detection of cancer services.
- To provide expert advice to the Wessex
Cancer Alliance and constituent organisations (commissioners and providers) in
relation to the role of primary care professionals working in cancer and lead
identified areas of work to develop and deliver the ambitions of the Wessex
Cancer Alliance Strategic Vision, in particular its primary care strategy
delivery programme.
- To lead coordination and alignment of the
primary care contribution of Dorset SSGs to the Alliance programme, ensuring
visibility of SSG generated innovation, challenge and improvements at Alliance
level and vice versa
