Job summary

Sir Liam Donaldson, Chair of the Integrated Care Board for the North East and North Cumbria wishes to appoint a doctor in training as a Clinical Fellow for a period of 12 months. The successful applicant will gain experience of the role of the Chair of the Integrated Care Board and the work of the organisation and its senior staff more widely. She/he will also become familiar with the Chairs work in global health, particularly in the World Health Organisation. The job will be highly varied in the tasks and projects undertaken.

Main duties of the job

The successful individual will have: a strong appreciation of the NHS as a system of care and the way in which it works with local authorities and other partners to achieve its objectives; the ability and adaptability to deal with complexity; and, outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrable ability to engage positively with individuals at all levels and across multiple organisations and sectors. The post is suited to doctors with a clear and settled interest in a future career that combines clinical practice with a wider leadership role with interests in areas such as: health policy, quality improvement and patient safety, healthcare management, health systems, management of change in complex areas of health and care, and global health. The post is comparable to the scheme that the Chair of the Integrated Care Board established when he was Chief Medical Officer for England during 1998 and 2010. Alumni of the scheme have subsequently had highly successful careers in clinical medicine, healthcare leadership and global health. The role is intended for a doctor who wishes to acquire such an experience at the end of Foundation Training before starting in Specialist Training, or someone who wishes to take a year out of Specialist Training before returning to complete it. It is likely that the appointment will be through a secondment agreement between the Integrated Care Board and the Postgraduate Deanery.
