This is an exciting time to join the team for the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB). As a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director you will be responsible for delivering support to the Executive. You will work closely with the Exec team to deliver an excellent service in supporting their delivery across the region.

About us

Please note that we support a hybrid model of working between home working and sites across the region. The senior management team which you will be a part of will be based in Sunderland. Please note that regular travel will be expected across the North East and North Cumbria.

Job Summary/ Purpose

The Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will provide senior leadership within the Integrated Care Board (ICB) and across the Integrated Care System (ICS) on all aspects of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion covering both the workforce and patient / service user agenda.

Hold ICB corporate responsibility at ICS, ICB and place for the identification, development and implementation of all required ICB functions and professional inputs and their successful co-ordination linked to diversity, equity and inclusion, including all related policy and strategy development.

Act as the ICB most senior advisor on all issues relating to diversity, equity and inclusion, providing advice to the board and any place related work that may be required.

The NENC system is characterised by significant number of NHS organisations and a diverse group of partners and stakeholders. A key element of the role will be to act as a system leader and role model, championing the values of the ICB and inclusion and belonging in particular.

Working with staff at all levels, the DEI Director will train and develop ICB staff to fully understand and meet the statutory requirements of the organisation in relation to diversity, equality and inclusion and most importantly to embed a culture that fully values the benefits of a diverse, equal and inclusive way of working that is evident throughout every level of the system.

The postholder will lead the development and implementation of diversity, equality and inclusion strategy, policies and practice for the ICB ensuring these aligned with national policy and practice and integrated across system partners.

A key requirement of the postholder is to work sensitively and with good judgement across a highly complex organisational system using highly developed skills in influencing, engagement, challenge and support in order to facilitate change in approaches and behaviours of staff and partners at all levels across the system and to maintain motivation for all aspects of diversity, equality and inclusion even in highly challenging situations.

The post holder will be an exemplar role model and have a demonstrable commitment to the development of others.

  • Evidence of sustained personal & professional development
  • Masters level qualification or equivalent experience with substantial senior management experience
  • Evidence of sustained personal & professional development

  • CIPD qualified or leadership qualification equivalent

  • Experience advancing an organisational culture into one of inclusivity, equity, and diversity
  • Demonstrated and extensive experience designing or managing DEI efforts in higher education, a public or private organisation.
  • Deep functional knowledge of DEI best practices.
  • Demonstrated success in developing cutting edge strategy and driving process improvements regarding diversity and inclusion issues in the workplace.
  • Increasing levels of responsibility and experience with recruitment in a professional or academic setting.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple initiatives simultaneously and determining priorities based on what is most important to the organisations success.
  • Knowledge and experience in cultural competency skills development and implementing equity, diversity and inclusion programs, trainings and educational tools
  • Substantial experience of operating at a very senior level and leading within a complex regulated environment.
  • Significant experience in leading complex and sometime contentious change and transformation at significant scale.
  • Experience of managing complex corporate portfolios for a statutory NHS organisation
  • Experience and success in addressing discrimination and inequalities.
  • Extensive knowledge of the health, care and local government landscape and an understanding of the social determinants of public health.
  • Knowledge of current thinking on practices which reduce health inequality, improve patient access, safety and well led.
  • Sound understanding of financial planning and budgeting, and oversight and control of public funds.
