Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Health Advising team in our county hub at Wheatbridge.

The Health Advisor will work in a busy integrated sexual health environment, within a multidisciplinary team. The staffing structure is designed to support the delivery of core services at a variety of locations throughout Derbyshire and Derby City to improve sexual health outcomes for the population.

As a sexual health adviser, you will be responsible for maintaining task lists including safeguarding/results/partner notification and recall amongst others. You will also be responsible for seeing patients in clinic and maintaining good quality conversations whether via telephone or face to face.

You will be supported by a team of health advising support staff and a senior health adviser, plus have access to senior clinicians throughout the service.

An agreement in relation to which requirements apply will be reached on an individual basis.

Have an in-depth working knowledge of STIs and be a competent and confident ISHS specialist nurse or be willing to work towards this

To provide information to patients diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection: how they are acquired, transmitted and treated.

To provide education and counselling pertaining to clients sexual health activities in an attempt to reduce high risk behaviour and improve overall sexual health outcomes

To provide effective partner notification to ensure contact(s) attendance and treatment by index (patient) referral as detailed in the SSHA PN policy, and to manage effective PN documentation within the INFORM system. This will include liaising with other health advisers within the sexual health community to exchange relevant information in order to facilitate partner notification and STI transmission. Support the results management and partner notification co-ordinator in all aspects of results management, taking primary responsibility for the notification and management of those with a BBI

To stress the importance of medical treatment and follow-up.

To discuss HIV with patients who may have been at risk or are worried.

To provide pre HIV test discussion and post HIV test counselling to those that require it

To provide initial post-test HIV counselling for newly diagnosed patients, their partners, significant others and offer ongoing counselling and psychosocial care dependant on the health advisers training, experience and supervision.

To ensure patients are followed up appropriately if they need to re-attend for results treatment or counselling by letter, phone, or home visit, in line with the ISHS SOP

To take a lead in sexual health promotion work within the clinic and liaise with the SHP team to ensure the community and clinic approach are equitable

To liaise with other local or national agencies as appropriate E.g. SARC, UKHSA, Social Care

To establish good working relationships with medical, nursing, and administration staff within the clinic, as well as with professionals from other departments

To take part in teaching programs as required for nursing staff, medical students or other statutory or voluntary bodies.

To continue professional development and training by attendance and contribution at relevant clinic/ Trust/ regional/ national meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences.

To participate in regular supervision and staff appraisal.

To work within SSHA guidance e.g. Code of Ethics, Code of Conduct, Guidelines for Good Practice, PN Policy.

To use own initiative and work independently but have the ability to identify when necessary to seek information from or refer patients to the Senior Health Advisor

Process positive BBI results received from laboratory tests using a set SOP and act upon these results to ensure the patient has been notified and a management plan in place

To oversee and support the results management and partner notification co-ordinator in competently attending to failsafe worklists to ensure the service is compliant in providing results to patients in a timely manner as laid out in BASHH Guidelines (2019)

Support the management of the results telephone lines including the provision of advice over the telephone to patients requesting information pertaining to their infections or their general sexual health

Management of patients requiring more complex intervention referring onto the Senior Health Advisor where appropriate

To oversee and support the results management and partner notification co-ordinator in the review of cytology results, their process and recall

To be responsible for documenting patient care in patient notes and accurately recording actions taken

To work together as a team to organise daily activities, adjusting plans and task allocation to adapt to emergent complexities and prioritising activities as appropriate, including ongoing tasks such as maintaining the failsafe lists and recall policies.

Education and Training

Essential

  • Registered Nurse - Level 1 Adult, direct entry midwife or RMN
  • Current NMC registration
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and safeguarding referrals for both adults and children
  • Working knowledge of all STI's and contraception methods
  • Qualified in Venepuncture

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification e.g. ENB 998 or equivalent
  • High level of computer literacy
  • Good numeracy and interpretation skills, competent at managing and manipulating data systems

Experience and Knowledge

  • Evidence of teamwork and autonomous practice
