Job responsibilities

The post holder will:

1. Manage equipment maintenance in close proximity to patients, in areas such as hospitals, residential homes and patients homes.
2. Service, diagnose, modify and repair a range of wheelchair equipment.
3. Ensure safe and responsible use of test equipment and tools.
4. Assess economic viability of repairing wheelchair and associated equipment versus replacement.
5. Be possibly exposed to verbal aggression and face challenging situations whilst working as a lone worker without immediate supervision.
6. Be prepared to be in unhygienic conditions with possibly unpleasant smells and infection materials when in patient homes.
7. Act in accordance with COSHH and PPE regulations and provided guidance.
8. Complete job-related documentation to required standard.
9. Prioritise allocated daily work schedule, adapting where necessary to accommodate emergency call outs and liaise direct with service users if required.
10. Request supplies, parts and accessories in preparation for repairs and maintenance, maintaining required stock levels.
11. Contribute as required to service development.
12. Undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) including mandatory, statutory and technical training (supervisory and supplier-provided) as required.
13. To be responsible for ensuring the provided vehicle is maintained in a roadworthy and clean condition in accordance with current transport legislation.
14. Empathise with patients and their medical conditions, whilst maintaining a professional demeanour at all times.
15. Follow Infection Control guidance at all times, regardless of working environment.
16. Be aware of personal safety at all times, utilising lone worker device and/or local escalation procedure as required.
17. Liaise with clinical colleagues to resolve maintenance/modification issues for service users and their equipment.
18. Share knowledge and experience with immediate technical colleagues to resolve repair and maintenance issues.
19. To support workshop activities when not out on the road including the refurbishment of wheelchairs and associated parts, decontamination of wheelchairs and scrapping of wheelchairs and parts.
20. Support wider department by delivering and collecting other medical equipment as requested.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Full Clean Driving Licence
• NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience in Engineering Maintenance - Mechanical

Desirable

• Previous experience of working within a healthcare setting

Other

Essential

• Willingness and ability to travel between and work at other sites.
• A good level of physical fitness and dexterity sufficient to perform the duties of the post with any aids and adaptations.

Skills, abilities and knowledge

Essential

• Ability to work effectively within a team and also independently
• Highly motivated
• Good IT skills - Knowledge of work and excel
• Basic IT skills including experience of Microsoft Office suite
• Be able to kneel, bend, stoop and work in cramped environments if necessary
• Able to drive for long periods of the working day
• Be able to manually handle loads of up to 20KG safely
• Knowledge of Safeguarding protocols relating to adults and children
• Good organisational, prioritisation and time management skills - to manage own work area and work load.
• Ability to prioritise work schedules to meet tight deadlines

Desirable

• Knowledge of SystmOne
• Knowledge of EQUIP
• Wheelchair repairs experience

Experience

Essential

• Driving Licence - able to drive 3.5 Tonne van
• Engineering experience - problem solve

• Experience working within the NHS

• Able to communicate effectively using the English Language
