Job summary

We would like to invite applications from Clinical Psychologists with experience of working with children and young people to join our hardworking, multi-disciplinary team. The Starfish Team delivers a countywide service offering assessment and intervention for children aged 5-18 with a diagnosed learning disability who are experiencing significant behavioural and/or mental health difficulties.

The person will be passionate and enthusiastic in their approach to service delivery and committed to improving the lives of children and young people.

You will work alongside experienced Clinical and Counselling Psychologists, Assistant Psychologists, Lead and Specialist Childrens Learning Disability Nurses, Specialist Family Support Workers, an Occupational Therapist, a Speech & Language Therapist, a Systemic Family Psychotherapist, a Communication and Therapy Assistant Practitioner, a Clinical Coordinator and other professionals involved in the assessment and planning of interventions for children and their families.

There will be opportunities to contribute to the supervision, teaching and training of other professionals within the team.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to use a range of assessment skills, interviews with parents and carers, and observations in a range of settings, to inform the assessment and diagnostic process as well as the planning and provision of interventions. See attached Job description for further details

Qualifications

Essential

  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, as accredited by the BPS, or a BPS Statement of Equivalence.
  • Training in the supervision of clinical psychologists (inc. trainees)

Desirable

  • Chartered Clinical Psychologist
  • Training in diagnostic assessment of Autistic Spectrum Disorders e.g., DISCO, ADOS & ADI).

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of children and young people across a range of care settings.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as a care coordinator and also within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan.
  • Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care.
  • Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different contexts.
  • Demonstrate further specialist training/experience through having received a minimum of 50 hours clinical supervision of working as a specialist clinical psychologist or an alternative agreed by the Head of Speciality.

  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information, including contentious and highly distressing information, to children and their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
