Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join the growing Speech and Swallowing Team in Leeds. The Speech and Swallowing team is set up to deliver an equitable and timely response to adults with communication and/or swallowing needs in their own homes. Our work is diverse and varied, working closely alongside a range of community professionals, including GPs, Community Matrons, Specialist Nurses, Specialist Neurology Services, Dietitians, care homes and home care providers. Excellent professional links exist with Speech and Language Therapy colleagues within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, and with the Leeds Beckett University SLT department, ensuring a wealth of opportunities for clinical and professional development. Interviews will be held on 26/5/23.The post is full-time, but we welcome applications for part-time hours.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a versatile, innovative individual with experience in adult speech and language therapy, preferably in a community setting.

The successful candidate will have fully completed post graduate competencies in dysphagia, enabling independent management. You will have supervising and mentoring experience as the post will include providing support to band 5 Speech and Language Therapists within the team. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills with a proven ability to form networks with both health and social care teams.

You will be able to deliver compassionate, patient focused care with a strong reference to the clinical evidence base. The successful candidate will be eager to develop their knowledge in specific clinical areas to improve practice and to strengthen the teams response to need.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for their own caseload within their speciality area as an autonomous practitioner. In doing so, they will assess, plan, deliver and evaluate patient centred programmes of care to a specialist level ensuring that they practice within their sphere of competence and knowledge. The post holder will work to professional and regulatory body codes, standards and guidance at all times ensuring that their practice is grounded in evidence based theoretical and practical knowledge.

1.5. Engages and actively involves the individual and, if appropriate, their family/carer, in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of treatment and/or care by using person-centred techniques to promote a culture of involvement and empowerment

1.6. Works to standards of proficiency identified by their professional and regulatory bodies performing clinical treatments/procedures to a competent standard

1.7. Prioritises their own workload, and that of the wider team, within agreed objectives deciding when to refer to others as appropriate.

1.8. Provides and receives complex, sensitive or contentious information where motivational, persuasive, empathetic, negotiating and reassurance skills are required whilst demonstrating an understanding of barriers to communication

1.9. Approaches each individual with care, compassion and sensitivity ensuring that these values are reflected in all areas of practice including the management of any complaints and compliments.
