Job summary

We are looking to recruit a dynamic and enthusiastic Library Trainee to join a small friendly team, providing a proactive library & information service. Based primarily at the Trust headquarters (currently in Leeds 6) you will be providing a service to Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust and other contracted organisations, including primary care across the city and public health staff in Leeds City Council.

Main duties of the job

The varied post will focus on day-to-day service delivery: main duties will involve issue desk work including enquiries, maintaining the document supply service, cataloguing and processing new resources and promoting the library in a variety of ways (including social media).

We use a library management system that is shared with other NHS libraries in Leeds and we administer NHS OpenAthens accounts for our users.

You will need experience of working in a library or similar environment (or equivalent NVQ Library and Information qualification), have confidence and proficiency with IT, a flexible attitude to work and good communication skills.

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose

The post incorporates a wide range of library duties including customer service, maintaining the day to day library processes and procedures, promotion of library services, library project work and providing administrative support to the library team.

This post is particularly suitable for someone committed to a career in librarianship and information work.

Provide library counter-services, including the issuing, discharging, renewing and reserving of items using the SirsiDynix library management system.

Undertake general enquiry work and provide assistance to library customers in the use of all library resources, equipment and IT facilities.

Assist customers in person or by phone, post or e-mail, giving a timely response and ensuring that a professional image is projected and maintained at all times.

Maintain the inter-library loans service (obtaining books and journals), including photocopying and downloading journal articles, processing and receipting of requests using Winchill inter-library loans software, and maintaining copyright documentation.

Produce reminders in respect of overdue books and journals and raise invoices for unreturned items.

Promote general care of the book-stock, including shelving, shelf tidying, repairing, withdrawing and processing items.

Assisting with collection management, e.g. de-selection of stock, deletion and amendment of database records at the request of professional library staff, identifying bibliographic details for acquisitions, accessioning and processing new stock items.

Raise awareness of national/local marketing campaigns by creating displays and ensuring appropriate resources are available.

Collate and produce analysis of marketing campaigns and produce statistics and reports as appropriate.

Requisitioning of stock and non-stock items.

Responsible for equipment (laptops and projectors loaned to users).

Support the librarians in the delivery of detailed enquiry work, understanding the roles and responsibilities of all members of the team, so that customers can be referred to the appropriate person if required.

Assist in the preparation of leaflets and library customer guides.

Assist in the maintenance of the library websites.

Support the librarians in providing information skills training sessions, including giving an introduction to new users on how to use the library service and providing basic advice and training in use of internet, databases and library catalogues.

Collect basic usage statistics to contribute to the evaluation of the service.

Maintain the Library Service in the absence of the Library Services Manager and Assistant Librarian.

Maintain and administer NHS OpenAthens accounts.

Put forward ideas & new initiatives for improvement and development of the library service within own work area.

Work proactively on a day to day basis within general guidelines, priorities and objectives.

Undertake any administrative duties or library project work, appropriate to the post, as requested by the librarians.
