An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified dental nurse to join our team at Leeds Community Dental Services.

We are a city wide service with clinics at Yeadon, Middleton and Chapeltown and would be expected to work from all 3 of these clinics. As a team we are committed to providing a high quality service to our community and committed to developing as a team Good written, verbal and communication skills are essential and previous knowledge of dental software/systems would be desirable although training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

Your primary responsibility will be to provide clinical and administrative support to Consultants, Specialists, Senior Dental Officers, Dental Officers and Dental Therapists in a wide range of treatments for our client base which includes adults and children, patients with complex medical and social/mental health needs and phobics.

To support and work with the dental nursing team in providing care to our patient base under the direction of the Dental Nurse lead within that clinic.

We would like you to have a welcoming and positive approach for our patients and be a motivated and reliable member of the team. We will need you to be flexible in your approach to work as we will need you to work at all of the clinics across Leeds, so ability to travel is essential.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose

The post holder will be providing direct and indirect patient care independently but with support available from a supervisor within the clinical area. In doing so, they will support the assessment of service users and implementation of programmes of care delegated to them by the appropriate staff member ensuring that they practice within their sphere of competence and knowledge. The post holder will work within a range of procedures and pathways in which they have received training in order to be competent.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical

1.1. The post holder will implement programmes of care within the limits of the procedures and pathways in which they have achieved competence.

1.2. Support and chair-side and clerical assistance to Consultants, Specialists, Senior Dental Officers, Dental Officers and Dental Therapists

1.3. Demonstrates developed physical skills obtained through practice and training e.g. accuracy, dexterity and coordination to assemble and dismantle specialist equipment, prepare and present materials and medicaments, manipulate delicate dental instruments

1.4. Works to standards of proficiency identified by their professional and regulatory bodies performing clinical treatments/procedures to a competent standard

1.5. Evaluates individual need in order to prioritise booking

1.6. Evaluates and assesses progress, condition or levels post-treatment ensuring that the patient is fit to leave the premises

1.7. Able to identify risk or changes in condition and are responsible for taking action and alerting the appropriate staff member

1.8. Exchanges factual information with service users using, reassurance, tact, persuasion and empathy and addressing barriers to understanding to engage the individual in their dental care and gain valid consent; ensure that all discussions are recorded in an accurate and timely manner in the patient record

1.9. Engages and actively involves the individual and, if appropriate, their family/carer, in their assessment, programme of treatment and/or care, by using personalisation techniques to promote a culture of self care, involvement and empowerment

1.10. Prioritises their own workload and understands the boundaries of their practice responding to clinc changes as required;

1.11. Approaches each individual with care, compassion and sensitivity ensuring that these values are reflected in all aspects of role

1.12. To comply with the organisations Infection Prevention and Control requirements, including bare below the elbows dress code for staff with a direct care delivery role.
