Job summary

Job PurposeThe Lactation Consultant will work in partnership with the Infant Feeding Lead and a multi professional HealthVisiting team in the provision of a specialist breastfeeding clinic for breastfeeding dyads living in Brent. Therole is integral to the 0-19 healthcare team in maintaining UNICEF Baby Friendly Standards and complying withthe WHO code.

The post holder will be responsible for:To act as a resource of clinical lactation expertise and skill, providing support to women and babies with complex breastfeeding needs in clinics and at home.To Collaborate with other healthcare professionals e.g., midwives and colleagues to supportbreastfeeding dyads.

Main duties of the job

Counsel mothers and families on initiation, exclusivity, and duration of breastfeeding, and to support mothers in high-risk situations.Provide in depth breastfeeding assessment, advice, and care plans.Provide support that is sensitive to the needs of the mother and family in working towards theirindividual breastfeeding goals.Being a resource for health visiting skill mix and other professionals to learn about specialist breastfeeding.Empower mothers and families to manage challenges as they arise.Advocate for breastfeeding women, infants, children, families, and communities.Provide guidance to colleagues relating to breastfeeding challenges.

  • Undergraduate degree (any discipline)
  • International Board of Lactation Consultant

Experience

  • Working with complex cases e.g. cleft palate, glandular hypoplasia, breast augmentation or reduction, supporting families with tongue tie
  • Assisting the breastfeeding mother to attain her individual breastfeeding goals.
  • Assessment and patient care regarding breastfeeding for newborns, infants and mothers

Desirable

  • Experience of delivering lactation education
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience (post IBCLE certification) of supporting breastfeeding dyads

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • A broad range and depth of current, evidence-based lactation knowledge
  • Evidence of continued professional development (e.g., attendance at International Lactation Consultant Association, Lactation Consultants of Great Britain and UNICEF Baby Friendly International conferences)
  • Strong clinical judgement skills

  • Evidence of having worked within the NHS as a lactation consultant
