Job summary

We are looking for an experienced, passionate Speech & Language Therapist with complex needs experience and paediatric dysphagia skills to be part of our dynamic team in Merton.

You will work closely with established multi-professional teams within Merton Community services and with outside agencies to support delivery of the complex needs and special schools service including supporting families with AAC devices. The successful candidate should have experience and dysphagia competencies at a specialist level to support children in the community and lead the dysphagia component of the SLT team. You will have had significant experience of working with a variety of children with complex needs in the community setting/ school/ home settings, have a passion for learning and supporting others and established communication and supervision/mentoring skills.

We are committed to professional development and evidence based practice, offering regular in-service training and peer group / one to one supervision within the wider CLCH family. Internal and external courses are supported.

Main duties of the job

Your role will be to provide assessment, advice and treatment to infants (over 6 months), children and young people (up to 19yrs) with a range of complex communication and dysphagia needs in the community and special schools. You will also support and develop the wider team's paediatric dysphagia knowledge. You will work for 3 days as part of the Preschool Complex needs Team, including work in clinics/schools and family homes with a largely preschool population. You will also work for 2 days Perseid Special School, supporting communication needs in the nursery and dysphagia needs across the whole of the Perseid population. This is a unique opportunity for the right person to develop and support the paediatric dysphagia skills of SLTs in Merton. The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate an understanding of current alternative and augmentative communication approaches e.g. PODD/ PECS/ alternative & augmentative devices to ensure children with complex needs maximize their SLT outcomes.

To monitor all aspects of parent / carer/ adult interactions with children. In particular, to simultaneously monitor auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of dyadic interactions, encouraging adaptive strategies to maximise effective communication

To monitor all aspects of parent/teacher/support worker meal time interactions with children and young people. In particular how eating and drinking passport advice is being followed and implemented across allenvironments.

To ensure that children families and carers are involved in planning and prioritisation of their eating and drinking passports/goals wherever possible.

To make appropriate clinical decisions following assessment, using evidence based practice and outcome measurement to provide the most effective treatment to children and their families within clearly defined careplans

To make a differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment

To adapt practice to meet individual childrens and families circumstances, including due regard for specific clinical conditions affecting their speech and language, cognitive, cultural, religious and linguistic differences

To ensure that children, families and carers are involved in the planning and prioritisation of their care plans and outcomes wherever possible

  • Degree or equivalent and Licence to Practice - Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT
  • Further study to Masters or equivalent level in clinical field, including completion of short courses and additional study
