Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Operational Resilience team as our new Medical Devices Manager.

You will be responsible for ensuring CLCH NHS Trust delivers an effective medical device service to our clinical staff.

You and the team will be responsible for developing and implementing a Trust-wide management system for medical devices. Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • working with service leads to ensure cost effective procurement of devices
  • ensuring the contractual obligations of our medical devices contractors are met
  • ensuring our medical devices inventory is accurate and up to date via regular audits

Main duties of the job

The Medical Devices Team provides a Trust wide service to Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust. The post holder will lead the medical devices team to deliver an effective service ensuring the suitability and maintenance of every medical device in the Trust.

The team is responsible for developing and implementing a Trust-wide management system for medical devices. This includes:

  • working with service leads to ensure cost effective procurement of devices
  • ensuring the contractual obligations of our medical devices contractors auditing the work carried out by our contractors including ensuring appropriate installation, maintenance, timely replacement and decommissioning
  • ensuring service leads are aware of their training requirements for specific devices, and are familiar with decontamination protocols

Job description

Job responsibilities

To advise and report to the Medical Devices Group, sub groups and to the Patient Safety and Risk Group on the planned programme of medical device management activity within the Trust.

To oversee the management of a Trust wide medical devices database, maintained by our contractor, providing an inventory of medical devices alongside servicing history.

To ensure that the Trust meets all requirements set by Care Quality Commission and Health and Safety at Work Act for medical device management.

To develop and monitor the key performance of all servicing contractors

across the Trust, ensuring that they meet all relevant legal and technical requirements, as well as all contractual performance indicators, e.g. for speed of breakdown response, and that they keep, and produce when requested, accurate records of all work undertaken.

To support and contribute to relevant servicing and maintenance contract tendering processes with the Procurement team.

To build relationships and work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary teams and with external partners to promote patient safety and reduce risk in the management of medical devices and patient equipment.

To support the commissioning and decommissioning of medical devices as part of a proactive medical device replacement programme and during mobilisation and demobilisation CLCH services.

To ensure systems are in place so that staff using medical devices owned by other bodies, e.g. GPs or Acute Trusts, understand their responsibilities to ensure that the equipment is safe for use.

To produce an annual report on the medical devices programme, for submission to the Medical Devices Group and Quality Committee.

To develop and review on a regular basis the Medical Devices Policy.

Schedule reporting requirements and the need to deliver the medical devices work programme to agreed milestones throughout the year, ensuring clinical risks that arise are also managed effectively.

To coordinate the work of the Medical Devices Group and sub groups, and to contribute to other working groups where medical devices expertise is required.

To manage and provide expert advice on MHRA safety alerts (CAS) and device Field Safety Notices ensuring they are received, acknowledged, disseminated, actioned and responded to within required timescales.

To ensure that CAS KPIs are regularly reported internally (e.g. Quality Committee) and externally (e.g. CCGs)`

To line manage the Medical Devices team in accordance with HR policy, ensuring good practice in recruitment, appraisal, learning and development.

To communicate and promote the Trusts vision, mission and values, as well as Trust objectives and briefings, to the team and foster a sense of common purpose in pursuit of goals.

Provide oversight of expenditure on medical device purchase, maintenance and training, ensuring value for money and economies of scale wherever possible.

Ensure good stewardship of Trust resources, whether through effective management of staff or the review of products and equipment; to demonstrate the productivity of the service; to promote financial awareness in the team and amongst stakeholders.

To ensure the achievement of service objectives within allocated financial resources.

To respond appropriately and promptly in investigating any complaints about the medical devices service or external servicing contractors.

To ensure the promotion of equal opportunities with respect to employment, staff management and service delivery.
