Job summary

Applications are invited for a Consultant Orthodontist at Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust. The position is based at the Birmingham Dental Hospital and at Boots Dental Outreach Centre. The dental hospital has strong academic, teaching and training links to the University of Birmingham School of Dentistry. This is a substantive part-time post for two days per week.

The main responsibilities include new patient consultation, treatment of complex cases, MDT clinics and supervision of postgraduate trainees, speciality dentists and orthodontic therapists.

The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic team at this major teaching hospital and will be involved in the treatment of severe and complex malocclusions. There is an emphasis on multi-disciplinary management including orthognathic surgery and collaboration with restorative and paediatric dentistry. In addition, the applicant will be expected to have an active involvement in the regional Orthodontic training programme based at the Dental Hospital, currently involving 9 StRs and 3 Post CCSTs, and to support undergraduate orthodontic training and education.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will treat specialist orthodontic cases that require

The expert skill levels of a consultant, which are currently on the treatment waiting list.

The post holder may also be asked to provide the continuation of treatment of selected cases that were previously undergoing treatment with another clinician.

The post holder will undertake diagnostic clinics bimonthly and participate in MDT clinics with other specialties including restorative dentistry, paediatric dentistry, oral surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery.

The consultant will be involved, as appropriate, in undergraduate and postgraduate education, in addition to the training of junior hospital staff and will contribute to the training programme for Specialty Registrars. There are currently 9 NHS Specialty Registrars and 3 Post CCST's in training.

The appointee will be expected to participate in clinical audit at Birmingham Dental Hospital and to contribute to the Clinical Governance Programme which has been implemented.

The consultant will be expected to attend and contribute to the regular departmental meetings, and to chair such meetings from time to time.

The applicant must demonstrate a strong aptitude for team working and assist in the development of an effective, efficient clinical service.

The post holder may be responsible for undertaking appraisal of identified staff.

The applicant may be responsible for leading in training and development of identified staff.

An opportunity has arisen for a part time consultant orthodontist post within the Dental Services Division of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

The hospital specialty of Orthodontics is based at Birmingham Dental Hospital, Glebefields Health Centre, Tipton and Boots, Birmingham City Centre.

The orthodontic department at Birmingham dental Hospital is shared with Paediatric dentistry and is situated on the first floor of the dental hospital. It has 24 chairs in an open plan layout. There is a modern, well equipped tutorial room and a computerised treatment planning room. An orthodontic laboratory is situated on the second floor and there are currently four technicians. Support services are provided including dental nurses, orthodontic therapists, orthodontic technicians and dental hygienists. Secretarial support is provided. Radiographic (including CBCT), photographic, computer and laboratory services are all present on site.

In addition, there are currently 3 post-CCST trainees. Most training grade staff spend part of their week in a district hospital. Friday of each week is set aside for the academic component of the training and related activities.

Job Purpose

The post is a part-time orthodontic consultant post to replace a retiring consultant based at Birmingham Dental Hospital and a community clinic within the Birmingham area. This post will be split between 2 sites.

The priority for this post is to undertake new patient clinics and carry out treatment for a cohort of patients from the existing waiting list.
