Job summary

Three substantive Consultant Community Paediatrician posts to be part of a team of 21 Consultant Paediatricians leading the Community Child Health Services in Birmingham. Offered as 10 PA posts. Part time applications will be considered.

Main duties of the job

The Community Paediatric Service is organised into five teams each serving a geographical sector of Birmingham and linking with one of the five child development centres. These posts will be part of the team providing secondary clinical community paediatric care in the North, East and South sector.

About us

Children and Families Division

The Children and Families Division brings together all Universal and Specialist community services for children in Birmingham and offers a co-ordinated approach for child health care. We work closely with all the paediatric services in Birmingham including Birmingham Children's Hospital, City Hospital (Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust), Heartlands Hospital and Good Hope Hospital (both under University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust). We have good links with the Clinical Commissioning Groups, the Local Authority and voluntary agencies providing care for children and are represented on the Health and Wellbeing Board.

Our aim is to provide excellent services for all children in Birmingham, focussed on the most vulnerable.

The range of services includes:

  • Universal Services for Children, including Health Visiting and Mainstream School Nursing.
  • Five Child Development Centres.
  • Community Paediatric Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Paediatric Eye Service and Dietetics.
  • Community Children's Nursing (including palliative care, rapid response and complex care nursing), the School Health Service for Special Schools, Safeguarding Children Team and the Edgewood Road Short Breaks facility.
  • Community Paediatrics.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Roles and Responsibilities to be Undertaken by the Post Holder

Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics

Working as part of an established multidisciplinary team, the post holder will undertake the specialist medical assessment, investigation and clinical management of the children with neurodevelopmental problems through designated clinics in the Child Development Centre and contribute to the multidisciplinary assessment process.

Child Protection

All consultants take part in the daytime non CSA Child Protection rota, both directly and in a supervisory role.

Rapid Response

To be part of the Rapid Response Team for Sudden Unexpected Deaths (SUDIC) providing the home visit and subsequent medical input in this process. The on-call frequency is approximately 1:9. This provides a 24 hour service (including weekends and bank holidays). Training will be provided to those who do not have competencies to join 1st on call rota.

Lead Role

Currently no lead role is attached to this post.

Special Schools

The post holder will provide Consultant input to special schools as required.

School based clinics are generally run fortnightly in term time which facilitates liaison with therapists based in school and educational colleagues. In school holidays the children are reviewed in neurodevelopmental clinics if needed.

Locality Provision

The post holder will provide specialist community paediatric services within East Birmingham, secondary referral clinics and provide a consultation service for the primary care teams and local schools according to agreed clusters.

Special Educational Needs

The post holder will provide medical advice to the Local Education Department relating to children with special educational needs under the Children and Families Act 2014.

Teaching

The post holder will be required to provide supervision and guidance for junior colleagues and medical students, and provide support to Health Visitors, School Nurses, and other Agency staff if deemed appropriate

Management

Together with the existing Consultant Community Paediatricians provide clinical leadership to the community paediatric team.

Work collaboratively with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, Heads of Service and Directorate Managers in planning services both locally and Trust wide.

Attend policy review meetings to discuss changes required to improve child health services for the local community.

On Call commitment outside normal daytime working hours

The on call requirement for SUDIC is described above. There is no acute paediatric on call commitment.

Other duties may be required as delegated by the Divisional Medical Director by agreement with the post holder.
