Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to offer this unique and exciting opportunity to apply for a Community focused Student Nursing Associate Apprenticeship which will offer development opportunities in a community setting.

This is a programme uniquely tailored to develop community nursing careers in Birmingham. It is the first dedicated cohort of Community Student Nurse Associate's to be offered in Birmingham Community Healthcare and provides an exciting gateway opportunity into a nursing career.

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to undertake the Student Nurse Associate programme via an Apprenticeship route. As a Student Nursing Associate, you will be placed within one of the community nursing teams across the City and surrounding areas of Birmingham. You will have clinical placement experience across a range of services within the Adult Community Services Division, working as part of the multi-professional team and with support from both your practice area and your University.

Please note that if you are an internal applicant to BCHC, there is no secondment opportunity. You are still able to apply on a fixed term contact, however your salary will be paid at the apprentice rate and not your current Agenda for Change Salary

Main duties of the job

You will be required to attend University one day a week and undertake practice placements to ensure that you develop the skills to care for people safely, with integrity, expertise, respect and compassion. Registered Nursing Associate posts will be available to Apprentices, on successful completion of the course and registration with the NMC

Nursing Associates provide care for people of all ages and from different backgrounds, cultures and beliefs. They provide care for people who have mental, physical, cognitive and behavioural care needs, those living with dementia, children and young people, the elderly and for people at the end of their life. They care for people in their own home, in the community or in any health care settings where their needs are supported and managed.

University College Birmingham (UCB) will deliver the academic programme over two years.As part of your Nursing Associate programme with UCB, you will have access to their practical and academic learning environments, including access to the skills and simulation suite to support you in practicing your clinical skills in readiness for placement.

We will ensure that students feel fully supported and experience a sense of belonging within Team BCHC, starting with a personalised induction to the Trust and supported with monthly Trust student forums.

You will be allocated to a Community Nursing Team that can support an Apprentice Student Nursing Associate. We will give consideration to the proximity to your home address as far as is practicably possible.

This programme will provide you with the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours associated with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards for Nursing Associates and register with the NMC on Part 2 of the Register. The Nursing Associate qualification also provides you with a stepping stone to Part 1 Registration with the NMC as a Registered Nurse, or ongoing career development through a BSc Pathway.

On successful completion of the programme, you will be appointed to a Band 4 Registered Nursing Associate post within one of the Community Nursing Teams. As part of the role, you will need to be a car driver.

  • GCSE/IGCSE grades A*-C (9-4) or equivalent in English. Ideally, you will also have GCSE in Maths at grade A*C (9-4), but we welcome applications without a maths qualification, and we can discuss your requirements individually and the support we can offer.

One of the following Level 3 qualifications is essential:

  • One A-level grade D or above
  • Two AS-levels grade D or above
  • BTEC National Award grade M/ Certificate PP/ Diploma Grade PPP
  • Access to HE Diploma
