Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a part time Consultant Orthodontist post based at Birmingham Dental Hospital with clinical services being provided within the hospital.

The hospital specialty of Orthodontics is based at Birmingham Dental Hospital within the Dental Services Division of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

The priority for this post is to undertake new patient clinics and carry out treatment for a cohort of patients from the existing waiting list. Service re-evaluation has confirmed the case complexity of patients requiring hospital treatment and this in turn has highlighted the level of clinical skills required. The post holder will be on the General Dental Council Specialist List in Orthodontics, will have had significant clinical experience and will be capable of unsupervised clinical activity.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will manage a number of specialist orthodontic cases which are currently under treatment at the Dental Hospital.

The post holder is also expected to undertake the treatment of selected cases from the treatment waiting list of the Orthodontic Department in order to help achieve the Government's targets for patient treatment waiting times.

The post holder may also be asked to provide the continuation of treatment of selected cases that were previously undergoing treatment with another clinician.

The post holder will be expected to develop a close working relationship with colleagues in Orthodontics and the other dental specialities.

The post involves 3.25 DCC sessions and 1.25 SPA sessions. involving supervision of postgraduate students and personal treatment. Postgraduates (StRs or Post CCSTs) will mostly be treating their own patients under supervision but some will have a new patient clinic.

The post holder will be expected to follow the department's procedures for delivery of clinical care and follow appropriate guidelines on clinical governance.

The post holder will need to work closely with the orthodontic consultants and consultants in other departments in the management of these cases.

The post holder will be managerially accountable to the Divisional Medical Director of Dental Services for the delivery of all aspects of the Dental Hospital service contracts as they affect the NHS specialty. The appointee will be expected to work in collaboration with the Head of Service for Orthodontics on all departmental matters.

The Consultant will be involved, as appropriate, in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education, in addition to the training of junior hospital staff and will contribute to the training programme for Specialist Registrars.

The appointee will be expected to participate in clinical audit at Birmingham Dental Hospital and to contribute to the Clinical Governance Programme which has been implemented.

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GDC.
  • On, or eligible for inclusion, GDC Specialist List in Orthodontics.
  • Completed a full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) since first obtaining registration, including adequate experience in the relevant specialty or equivalent experience and competencies.
  • Membership in Orthodontics of the Royal College or equivalent.
  • Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation of eligibility for a CCST in Orthodontics - Membership in Orthodontics or equivalent. Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the Faculty of Dental Surgery or equivalent. Intercollegiate Fellowship Examination in Orthodontics or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of an SAC-approved minimum three year training programme in Orthodontics.
  • Successful completion of an SAC -approved minimum two year training in a Fixed Term Training Appointment (FTTA) which follows on from the pre-CCST training period of 3 years, or within 6 months of completion, or equivalent for other European Economic Area (EEA) Nationals.
