Birmingham Community Healthcare (NHS) Foundation Trust provides a wide range of high quality, accessible and responsive community and specialist healthcare services across the City of Birmingham and the wider West Midlands region. This post is in the community paediatric service within the Children and Families Division.
The Division brings together all Universal and Specialist Community Services for Children and provides a co-ordinated approach for child health care. Good links are maintained with the Clinical Commissioning Groups, the Local Authority and voluntary agencies providing care for children.
This post will be part of a Team of 23 Consultant Paediatricians and 5 Specialty Drs, leading the Community Child Health Services in Birmingham.
The post will provide training in all areas of community paediatrics which will include participation on the child protection rota. There is no out of hours on call commitment attached to this post.
Location: Allenscroft Child Development Centre (but this may be subject to discussion)
Main duties of the job
1. Speciality Clinics
Referral & Children in Care Clinics
The post holder will provide medical input into these clinics in a locality under the supervision of a Consultant/Specialty Doctor.
Child Protection
The post holder will take part in the day-time rota for examination of children in whom there are concerns about abuse, having had appropriate training. The post holder will be expected to provide an opinion, provide reports, attend case conferences and attend court proceedings as required. Consultants are available to discuss/supervise all child protection cases.
Special School Clinics
The postholder will undertake special school clinics under the supervision of a Consultant Community Paediatrician.
2. Liaison
Liaison with other healthworkers (e.g. Speech Therapists, Physiotherapists, Orthoptists), plus Social Workers, Teachers and Educational Psychologists. Opportunity is provided to attend Case Conferences.
3. Health Promotion
The Post holder will be expected to participate in health promotion programmes for children as required.
4. Teaching and Training
This post is not recognised for training but we are a teaching department. We have trainees in Paediatrics, medical students from Birmingham University and other attachments e.g. GP registrars, trainees in clinical genetics, community paediatric nurses, HVs and therefore the post holder may have opportunities to be involved in teaching.
About us
The Children and Families Division brings together all Universal and Specialist community services for children in Birmingham and offers a co-ordinated approach for child health care. We work closely with all the paediatric services in Birmingham including Birmingham Children's Hospital, City Hospital (Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust), Heartlands Hospital and Good Hope Hospital (both under University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust). We have good links with the Clinical Commissioning Groups, the Local Authority and voluntary agencies providing care for children and are represented on the Health and Wellbeing Board.
Our aim is to provide excellent services for all children in Birmingham, focussed on the most vulnerable.
The range of services includes:
- Universal Services for Children, including Health Visiting and Mainstream School Nursing.
- Five Child Development Centres.
- Community Paediatric Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Paediatric Eye Service and Dietetics.
- Community Children's Nursing (including palliative care, rapid response and complex care nursing), the School Health Service for Special Schools, Safeguarding Children Team and the Edgewood Road Short Breaks facility.
