Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a person who enjoys usingand exploring technology like a mobile phones or electronic tablets to join the clinical support teamwithin the Access to Communication and Technology Service for a fixed term of 2 years.

The post holder will be supporting clinical staff to provide assistive technologies to clients who have a range of complex conditions working within three clinical caseloads relating to Electronic Assistive Technology (EAT): people with severe physical disabilities who may need Environmental Control (EC) or alternative computer access and people with communication and language difficulties who may need Alternative & Augmentative Communication (AAC).

The role will involve preparing and amending electronic assistive technology and low tech strategies.

Experience in working with AAC and or EC is not needed but an interest in working with people and in using technology is.

The post will be based at West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre in Selly Oak, Birmingham but covers the wider West Midlands area so the post holder will need to be able to drive around the region in both their own car and Trust pool cars

Main duties of the job

To assist the clinical team in their assessment of clients for a range of Assistive Technologies and/or low tech strategies. Clients have a range of conditions which include complex physical and/or learning disabilities, life limiting diagnoses and challenging behaviours.

To set up and amend the electronic assistive technology to meet the clinician's prescription.

To assist the clinical team in providing training regarding techniques and Assistive Technology to clients, their families, and local professionals.

To follow instruction to produce resources for individual patients and generic use to support communication and environmental control

To support the smooth running of the department by supporting device/stock management functions

To establish effective working relation with the following:

  • ACT Team - Clinical, Technical, Stock and Administration staff
  • Patients, their carers and families
  • Assistive technology providers
  • Other departments
  • External organisations such as Higher Education providers, professional bodies and other stakeholders
