We are seeking enthusiastic, self-motivated Dental Nurses to join our dental team who can relate to all age groups and who can assist clinicians and dental students with a full range of procedures.
We are recruiting to a number of fixed term, substantive, part time and fulltime Band 4 Dental Nurse posts for various clinical areas within Birmingham Dental Hospital and at the Dental Outreach Centre.
Please note that there will be a practical assessment conducted on the same day as the interview on Saturday 21st May 2022. Should you be unsuccessful at the practical you will unfortunately not be invited to the interview.
There will be a virtual Open Evening on 5th May 2022 between 18:00 and 19:30 for candidates who wish to learn about the service we provide, and the opportunity to understand the NHS application process and requirements. Main duties of the job
To work flexibly within a dental team providing high quality care to a wide spectrum of patients within various departments at Birmingham Dental Hospital. In addition to this we will also be looking to recruit to bank Dental Nurse posts.
The hours will be worked flexibly between 08:00 and 20:00 including evenings and weekends.
Dental Nurses will be provided with a base Clinic/Department when appointed but will be expected to work flexibly across different sites where Dental treatment is provided.
To provide chair side assistance to Clinicians within the Dental service plus arranging/supporting the Clinician with any necessary Domiciliary visits.
To assist in screening, epidemiology and research programmes.
To carry out clerical and administrative duties to ensure efficient operation of the Clinic/Department.

Core Duties:
- The Dental Service compromises of a wide range of locations, specialities and services, the post holder will be required to provide comprehensive chair side and administrativesupport to a clinician within a Department/clinic based in BDH, Community clinics and/or Domiciliary setting.
- To prepare and monitor patients for and during their Dental treatment providing pre and postoperative instructions as required.
- To undertake the general care of the surgery including Dental equipment/instruments and arrange any necessary repairs as required.
- To ensure medical emergency drugs and equipment are available and up to date.
- To provide assistance to the Clinician using inhalation sedation as required following approved training.
- To provide chair side assistance and postoperative instructions during general anaesthetic and exodontia sessions as required.
- To provide oral health education to patients as required by the Dentist.
- To assist the Senior Dental Nurse in the smooth running of the Dental service.
- To support and assist Undergraduate Dental Students.
- To support and supervise Apprentice Dental Nurseand Foundation Degree students.
Main Duties:
- To assist the clinician in delivery of clinical duties to include:
- Ensuring correct instruments/equipment/medicaments are available for the session and that the clinical area is set up appropriately prior to treatment adhering to infection control guidelines.
- Ensuring patient records are available prior to treatment and updated.
- Processing Dental radiographs using the relevant local processing systems in accordance with local protocols and IRMER Regulations.
- Undertaking the decontamination process of Dental instruments as required and/or the preparation of instruments complying with Trust guidelines and the Control of Cross Infection Policy.
- Carry out necessary clinic daily checks.
- Dispose of clinical/non-clinical waste as required including safe disposal of sharps in line with the trust policy.
- Be aware of Trusts Health and Safety Policies including COSHH Regulations especially the use of all chemicals and procedures for any spillage that may occur.
- Stock control/rotation and the ordering of Dental consumables as required from appropriate suppliers.
- Assemble and utilise specialist equipment as required.
- Support the induction of new staff as required.
- Take part in clinical governance activities and comply with standards set by the Dental service.
- To undertake health and safety risk assessments as required.
Administrative Duties to include:
- Deal with day-to-day enquiries and telephone calls from patients and the public.
- Ensuring all patient records are filed correctly as required and in accordance with local protocols.
- Ensuring appointments and recalls are undertaken as required.
- Handling small amounts of cash and taking patient charges.
- Action patient referrals where necessary following local protocols.
- Updating electronic patient records.
- Maintaining appropriate IT skills.
Training and Personal Development:
- The post holder will be expected to participate in Continuing Personal Development (CDP) through the Personal Development Review (PDR) process.
- To maintain General Dental Council (GDC) registration.
- To achieve the required Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours as specified by the GDC.
- All staff will be expected to complete Trust mandatory training and any other identified essential to role training.
Additional Duties (where applicable):
Conscious Sedation:
- The post holder will be in possession of an Advanced Certificate in Conscious sedation when assisting in the care of a patient undergoing conscious sedation.
- Assist the Clinician in providing intravenous/inhalation sedation to patients in accordance with the Trust guidelines.
- To clinically monitor the patient pre operatively, during treatment and post operatively and have the necessary skills to be able to detect changes in the patients condition and assist effectively in the management of medical emergencies.
- To ensure medical emergency drugs including reversal agent and equipment are available.
- To be responsible for preoperative checks of specialist equipment e.g. pulse oximeter, blood pressure monitors and inhalation sedation machine.
- In conjunction with the operating Dentist to be responsible for the management of controlled drugs adhering to the Trusts Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Attend appropriate training updates in accordance with Departmental and National policies which may include specific study days.
- To attend mandatory updates in Resuscitation to the level of Immediate Life Support (ILS).
- To maintain a record log of all sedation cases.
Radiography:
- The post holder will be in possession of a recognised qualification and certificate in Dental Radiography and act as a Radiographic Operator, taking x-rays on referral from a Dentist as part of a patients treatment plan.
- To ensure compliance with local operator rules and guidance in accordance with the Department quality assurance programme.
- Ensure all Radiographs taken are recorded and graded by the prescribing Clinician.
- The post holder will be expected to maintain registration, regularly taking Radiographs and undertake post qualification core of knowledge training on a 5 yearly cycle. In addition, the post holder will participate in Radiography audits to ensure high quality as required.
- All the above duties must be undertaken in accordance with Dental Services, Trust local policies and procedures plus IR(ME)R 2000 procedures.
Oral Surgery Clinics:
- To assist the Dentist in all aspects of Oral Surgery sessions.
- Assist the Clinician during specialist Oral Surgery procedures to include pre and postoperative instructions.
- Maintenance of Oral Surgery specialist equipment.
- Maintain adequate levels of materials and drugs for the Oral Surgery clinics as required.
- Adhere to Acute Hospital policies and procedures as required.
Orthodontics:
- To assist the Orthodontist/Orthodontic Therapist in all aspects of Orthodontic treatment sessions.
- Responsible for the clerical and administrative duties associated with the Orthodontic service as required.
- Responsible for the management, recording and storage of study models/ records, as determined by local protocols.
- Monitor stock control and ordering of Orthodontic supplies as required.
- To provide postoperative instructions relevant to Orthodontic appliances and oral health instruction as required.
Special Care Dentistry:
- To assist the Clinician in the management of a patient with additional special needs. This may include patients with multiple learning/physical disabilities and severe challenging behaviour.
- To liaise with other healthcare professionals and external services as required.
- Responsible for the clerical and administrative duties associated with the Special Care service as required.
- Maintenance and responsibility for the specialist domiciliary equipment.
- Ensuring that all moving and handling equipment is available for the sessions following the appropriate level of the Trust manual handling training.
General Anaesthesia Sessions:
- To assist in the delivery of dental procedures carried out under General Anaesthesia.
- To provide pre and postoperative instructions relevant to General Anaesthesia procedures.
- To attend mandatory updates in resuscitation to the level of Adult and Paediatric Immediate Life Support (ILS).
- Adhere to Acute Hospital policies and procedures as required.
Mobile Operator:
- To be responsible for all aspects of the running of the Dental Mobile Unit.
- Organise day to day running of the Unit, included planning the schedule of work, this will include liaising and communicating with staff from various sites.
- To ensure appropriate consent has been obtained to enable all Dental treatment to be carried out.
- Responsibility for escorting patients from the Dental Mobile Unit to Schools and Centres.
- Collect and drive Mobile Dental Unit from base to establishments as required within the Borough following appropriate training.
- Ensure the Mobile Surgery is set up appropriately prior to treatment adhering to infection control guidelines.
- Responsible for the overall management of the clerical and administrative duties associated with the Mobile Dental Unit, which involves liaising with parents and carers out of the Mobile Surgery setting.
