Job summary

Should you be successfully shortlisted for this post, there will be a practical test in the morning and a formal interview in the afternoon.

We have an opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced prosthetic technician to join our large team at Birmingham Dental Hospital.

You will work in the team providing a range of prosthetic appliances, full, partial and, CoCr dentures. You will assist in the routine maintenance of the Dental Laboratory.

The successful candidate would work a 37.5 hour week, between the hours of 08:00 and 20:00

Main duties of the job

The post holder works autonomously and is responsible for the design, planning, and construction of precision custom made, complete and partial removable appliances, over dentures, onlay appliances, immediate restoration appliances, training plates, and myofunctional splints. For the Restorative, Paediatric, Periodontics and special Care dental departments.

We have a new multidiscipline laboratory serving the NHS and Birmingham University, undergraduate and post graduate dentists, covering 130000 patients attendances.

Job responsibilities

Technical Duties

The post holder is responsible for ensuring the provisions of the above technical services within the hospital.

  • Plan, design and construct custom made removable prosthetic appliances using arcon and nonarcon articulators.
  • Plan design and construct diagnostic wax-ups for treatment planning and support the clinicians in evaluating patient expectations and providing them with more detailed information.
  • Evaluate the quality of the dental prescription and items supplied from the clinical areas are of sufficient quality to proceed with construction of appliance.
  • Plan, coordinate and prioritise daily personal workload to meet laboratory deadlines and to meet service requirements, bringing any areas of concern to the attention of the laboratory manager.
  • Provide emergency service and repairs for patients.
  • Demonstrate/discuss techniques with undergraduates, clinicians, dental nurses and visitors when required. Provide advice, when asked, on selection of materials and the correct and safe use of equipment within the laboratory.
  • Responsible for producing a high quality standard of work, as stated in the Laboratory Operational Guideline Procedures.
  • Use the laboratory dedicated computer system to book finished appliances and deal with enquiries when required.
  • Utilise various specialised pieces of machinery within the laboratory including compressed gases, ultraviolet lights, grit blasting, heating tanks and pressure forming equipment.
  • Undertaking more complex work involving implant restorations and other highly complex work under supervision and further training.
  • To competently deal with patients who have oral facial abnormalities and special needs patients. The post holder must maintain a high level of professionalism, at all times when communicating with patients and their relatives/carers.
  • Always required to stand/sit at the bench for long periods of concentration due to the intricate nature of appliances being constructed and to carry out the duties associated with the post.
  • It will be necessary for the post holder to undertake any other duties commensurate with the post, within their technical skills and in agreement with the Production Laboratory Manager.

  • Deal with internal and external telephone enquiries routinely.
  • Advise and assist consultants, senior and junior clinical staff and undergraduate dental students on technical design and problems relating to patient treatment and expectations.

Personal and Team Development

  • To participate in regular laboratory/clinic staff meetings and contribute to policy changes and procedures.
  • To participate in Quality and Audit Initiatives undertaken by both the clinic and the Trust.
  • To maintain the strictest confidences in relation to personnel related information and it must be recognised that all patient related information is confidential whether formally recorded or not.
