Job summary

We are delighted to be able to offer a committed therapy assistant the opportunity to join our childrens community service. This is a community post, across the large city of Birmingham, with a caseload of children and young people with neurological and developmental conditions. The successful applicant will have previous experience of working with children or as a therapy assistant. Candidates should be enthusiastic and have good communication skills

The post-holder will work as part of the occupational therapy team, working under the guidance of an identified occupational therapist.

Main duties of the job

To assist the BCHC Paediatric Occupational Therapy Team in providing an occupational therapy service to children in various community settings across Birmingham. This may involve visits to homes, schools, nurseries and other educational settings

The post holder may work independently without direct supervision at times. However they will be in regular liaison with a designated Occupational Therapist, who will assess all children and delegate to the post-holder accordingly.

The post holder will also be required to undertake clerical duties as requested, using the Email and Intranet systems as appropriate

Main Duties include:

Carry out specific designated treatment programmes and related tasks as agreed with the Occupational Therapist who has assessed the child, making adjustments within agreed parameters.

To advise children, families and other carers on routine use of equipment and how to make adjustments as appropriate.

To communicate effectively and sensitively with children and carers to maximise rehabilitation potential. This will involve the use of a range of communication skills including persuasion, motivation, explanation and an understanding of alternative communication systems that may be used by the child, including sign language, gestures and other non-verbal methods.

Participate in regular, documented supervision meetings with the Occupational Therapist to review the children under the post holders care and agree an action plan.

Advise parents, nursery/school staff and other carers on aspects of the Occupational Therapy care plan to reinforce Occupational Therapy objectives.

To plan and organise daily workload, ensuring that daily tasks and on-going workloads are prioritised and completed within agreed and acceptable timescales, ensuring that changes are discussed and agreed with the line manager

Communicate information effectively to the multi-disciplinary team, including colleagues in Education, Social Care and Health and other services to contribute to the delivery of a co-ordinated service.

To maintain cleanliness of toys and equipment, following the departmental policy.

Be an active member of the Paediatric Occupational Therapy Team participating in staff meetings, in-service training programmes and team appraisals. Through the appraisal system, work with senior staff to identify own learning needs.
