An exciting opportunity is available for the right candidate to join LCHS NHS Trust as a Speech and Language Therapy Apprentice. The right candidate will need to demonstrate that they are highly motivated, problem solvers, demonstrate good time management, and a willingness to succeed using the LCHS NHS Trust values and behaviours.
The academic element of the apprenticeship will be provided by the Birmingham City University (BCU) over 48 months starting in January 2024 .
As a Speech and Language Therapy Apprentice you will be a paid employee on a standard AFC contract with an addition of ANNEX 21 Terms and conditions.

Main duties of the job
The apprentice will be undertaking an education programme within the Trust. Education will be delivered through formal education in partnership with the Birmingham City University. Rotation through internal and external clinical practice placements under supervision to meet learning outcomes of the Apprenticeship standard.
The broad purpose of the occupation is to improve quality of life, health, and well-being for people with communication difficulties and/or dysphagia (eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties). Applying evidence-based science to clinical practice, SLTs are the lead professionals who assess and improve outcomes for people who have speech, language, communication needs (SLCN), voice, fluency, and/or eating, drinking, and swallowing difficulties. Communication and eating and drinking difficulties can have a significant impact on someone's life from birth to death. There is huge variety in roles; some SLTs work with children to identify and develop their communication difficulties so they can reach their full potential, whereas others work with adults with conditions that affect their communication and/or swallowing such as stroke, dementia.

- To work within defined departmental and national policies/protocols and Royal College SLT professional standards
- To contribute to inter-agency/ multi-disciplinary team building under supervision
- To assume delegated tasks as requested under supervision including participation in working groups
- To participate in projects, in liaison with peers where this is appropriate to do so
- To support complex issues as they arise, and seek professional support to generate appropriate strategies for caseload management
- To provide advice to others under supervision regarding management/ care of patient/ clients with communication and/or eating and drinking difficulties
- Write reports reflecting clinical knowledge where this is appropriate to do so
- Ensure that requirements of the Birmingham City University are regularly discussed with a mentor, line manager and the Trust Apprentice Centre where this appropriate to do so.
