The deputy chief pharmacist post supports the chief pharmacist with the leadership and management of our continually growing pharmacy team.
The pharmacy team comprises of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and a pharmacy assistant who support our inpatient wards, virtual wards, anticoagulation services, PCN teams, and corporate pharmacy team.
The postholder will be the lead pharmacist for safety, strategy and operations within the pharmacy team. They will be the named MSO (Medication Safety Officer) for the Trust and lead on the Trust's medication safety agenda.
The postholder will also lead on a number of other areas, as specified in the job description. This will include: the review and implementation of relevant NICE guidance, review and updating of PGDs, staff education and training, delivery of medicines management services, and support for non-medical prescribing and EPMA.
The role is a minimum of 30 hours per week and full time may be negotiable, with flexibility as to how the hours are worked over the course of the week.
Main duties of the job
- To be responsible for managing the Clinical Governance and Operational Services of the Hertfordshire Community Trust (HCT) Pharmacy Department
- To act as the Trust Medication Safety Officer (MSO) and lead on the Trust's medication safety agenda
- To provide senior leadership and specialist expertise on medicines optimisation and pharmaceutical services undertaken within or on behalf of the Trust
- To provide expert clinical, therapeutic, legislative and best practice advice to promote safe and effective use of medicines across the Trust
- To help promote and ensure safe and effective use of medicines across the Trust
- To lead on the development and delivery of medicines management, prescribing, and medication safety related education and training to pharmacy colleagues, non-medical prescribers (NMPs) and other healthcare professionals across the Trust
- To line manage, supervise, and support members of the pharmacy team, which will also include members of the Primary Care Network (PCN) pharmacy team
- To assist with the recruitment of clinical and operational staff in the department
- To lead on behalf of the Chief Pharmacist on specific delegated projects both within the Trust and with external organisations
- To work with the Chief Pharmacist to review and improve performance of Pharmacy services through benchmarking and quality improvement approach
- To deputise for the Chief Pharmacist, as required in their absence

The successful applicant will need to be self-motivated and able to work on their own, whilst also integrating into a well-established team. You will have excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills together with a good working knowledge of hospital pharmacy. Knowledge of pharmacy PCN services would also be advantageous.
The successful candidate must have significant clinical and training experience, be passionate about patient safety and quality, as well as having proven leadership ability and vision. Experience of implementing Medicines Optimisation or Medicines Safety projects will be ideal. You will need to have a combination of at least five years post registration experience and a clinical diploma or similar experience. You will also need a great deal of self-motivation, sound clinical knowledge and computer literacy. The role will also be supported by a full training package, according to needs.
The role is part-time (30 hours per week), with some flexibility as to how the hours are worked over the course of the week. Remote working may be possible for some aspects of the role, however flexibility and a commitment to working on site when required is essential. Additional commitment to work weekends, late shifts, and bank holidays is not currently required, as pharmacy dispensing services are provided by local acute hospital trusts. Participation in the on-call advisory service on a rota basis will however be required (service is provided daily until 8pm).
