Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Psychologist with a keen interest in Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Autism and Learning disability to work within a multi-disciplinary early intervention Mental Health Support Team (MHST). The post holder will be involved in the development and implementation of the MHST for Special Schools across Hertfordshire and West Essex.

We are seeking to appoint a motivated and forward thinking clinician who can work flexibly, and is committed to the success and delivery of the trailblazer project. The post will be full time on a fixed term until 2023, based in Sandridge Gate, St Albans with regular planned travel to the 14 MHST schools in Hertfordshire and West Essex and virtual working from home. PALMS and the MHST are open to flexible working and therefore part time / job share would be considered, working a minimum of 0.6 WTE. We would also welcome applications from internal candidates working in the post as a secondment opportunity.

Main duties of the job

The ideal candidate will be:

  • ble to support and enhance the care of children and young people (CYP) within the service.
  • Able to provide psychological assessment and interventions within the MHST under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist.
  • Able to develop effective and mutually respectful relationships with health, education, social care and voluntary sector
  • Able to assist in clinically related administration, conduct audits and research projects, collect and analyse service data, develop databases, and to participate in teaching and project work.
  • Able to collect and analyse service data to inform the National picture of MHSTs for Special Schools.
  • Able to actively contribute to the development of the service.
  • Able to maintain a high degree of professionalism when working in settings where there is a highly emotive atmosphere.
  • Flexible in their approach and have resilience under pressure
  • Able to work both in a team environment and autonomously

About us

The MHST are working in collaboration with schools to increase and improve emotional and mental health provision within education settings for 5-18 year old's. The Assistant Psychologist will be working within a successful Trailblazer site, which has emerged out of the government's December 2017 plans: Transforming Children and Young People's Mental Health Provision: a Green Paper. Furthermore, this is a unique MHST working purely with Special Schools and therefore an exciting opportunity to inform the national picture.

The MHSTs will deliver evidence based interventions supporting emotional wellbeing including group interventions, individual interventions, consultation and training and incorporates full assessments of care needs and risk assessments. The ultimate aim of the MHST is to support a whole school approach to develop, build and support emotional well-being.

The MHST is hosted by PALMS (Positive behavior, Autism, Learning disability, Mental health Service). PALMS offer individually tailored support for children and young people (CYP), aged 0-18 who have a global learning disability and/or Autistic Spectrum Disorder, helping families to manage challenging behavior and/or to support mental health needs. PALMS aim to keep children and young people with their families within Hertfordshire thereby improving outcomes for all family members. PALMS provides early intervention where necessary and intensive support to families reaching crisis with a step up and step down approach throughout their care journey. Interventions include workshops, groups, individual therapy, and therapeutic work with parents/carers/siblings.

We can offer you:

  • Regular appraisal, personal development planning and opportunities for continuing professional development.
  • Opportunities to work closely with a multi-disciplinary team and learn from other evidence based frameworks and approaches.
  • Involvement in service development including undertaking clinical audits, project work and service forums.
  • 27 days annual leave, 29 if you have worked for the NHS for 5 years and 33 if you have worked for the NHS for 10 years, in addition to 8 days bank holidays.
  • Entitlement to the NHS pension scheme.

This role requires you to drive across Hertfordshire and West Essex to visit children and schools. You must hold a full valid driving license, and access to a car to use regularly for business purposes is essential (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010).
