An exciting new role has arisen for a fixed term band 7 SALT clinical leadership role working within the AHP staff team within the neonatal ward at Worcester Royal Hospital.

The unit is an 18 bedded level 2 unit, including 2 ITU cots, 4 HDU cots and 12 Special Care. There is also a 9 bedded Transitional Care Unit, jointly managed with maternity to prevent or reduce babies being separated from their parents.

Worcester Royal Hospitals Neonatal Unit provides stabilisation for babies below 27 weeks in emergency cases and works alongside transport services and the West Midlands Operational Delivery Neonatal Network to transfer them to more suitable NICUs.

The promotion of baby friendly standards and family integrated care are extremely important to the unit and are currently working towards becoming a standalone baby friendly Neonatal Unit.

The post holder will provide visible and high-quality professional leadership across Neonatal within the AHP team, supporting the Divisional Quality Improvement plan. Through the ability to inspire and lead you will drive and implement practice improvement and staff development to improve our families journey.

You will be line managed by the Team at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care Trust. You will have clinical supervision and support via the West Midlands neonatal network. You will become an integral part of the support and supervision on the ward, both offering and receiving support.

Main duties of the job

To take responsibility for managing a caseload of babies referred to the service during their inpatient stay on the neonatal unit at Worcester Royal Hospital. This would include specialised interventions for complex babies, plus supporting development and implementation of targeted and universal provision.

This is a Specialist role and would involve Leadership on the unit.

You will work collaboratively with your community colleagues to ensure smooth transition out of the ward.

You would be involved in offering eating, drinking and communication advice whilst the babies are on the unit and support for discharge planning.

This neonatal role is to deliver the speech and language therapy dysphagia provision on the acute neonatal unit. To work in partnership with the AHP team which includes OT, Physio, Dietitian and SALTs.

The post holder will need to have training, experience and competence in dysphagia assessment and advice for babies and neonates as they will be the lone SALT on the unit. They will need to have experience working collaboratively and boundary setting across an multidisciplinary team for the benefit of neonatal care.
