Job summary
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an exceptional clinician to join the Quality and Patient Safety Team as the Head of Continuous Quality Improvement and Patient Safety.
The successful person will be the named Patient Safety Specialist for the Trust and will lead in embedding a culture of continuous improvement across the trust with a focus on improving quality and patient care, eliminating waste, reducing variation, and improving efficiency.
The post holder will be the lead patient safety expert and will provide dynamic, senior leadership, visibility and expert support to the patient safety work in the Trust.
They will lead patient safety improvement activity and ensure that systems thinking, human factors understanding and just culture principles are embedded in all patient safety processes. They will promote patient safety thinking beyond why things go wrong in healthcare (Safety I), to examining why things routinely go right and how that can be maximised (Safety II).
Main duties of the job
The post holder will need to have advanced knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies and experience of using these in multiple healthcare settings. You will have experience in taking the lead in reviewing and implementing long term QI priorities, processes, training and strategy, working with the senior clinicians, frontline teams, operational and Executive Teams. The role will also manage the Quality Improvement Board providing visible support and leadership across the Trust.

The Head of Continuous Quality Improvement and Patient Safety will be the lead patient safety expert in the organisation. The post holder will be the captain of the team and provide dynamic, senior leadership, visibility and expert support to the patient safety work in the Trust. They will support the development of a patient safety culture and safety systems, and will have sufficient seniority to engage directly with the executive team. They will work in networks to share good practice and learn from each other
The post holder will lead, and directly support, patient safety improvement activity and ensure that systems thinking, human factors understanding and just culture principles are embedded in all patient safety processes. They will promote patient safety thinking beyond why things go wrong in healthcare (Safety I), to examining why things routinely go right and how that can be maximised (Safety II). They will support their organisations patient safety partners (patient and public representatives specifically involved in patient safety) as identified in the NHS Patient Safety Strategy.
The post holder will have advanced knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies and experience of using these in multiple healthcare settings. The post holder will take a lead in reviewing and implementing the Trusts long term QI agenda, processes, training and strategy, working with the senior clinicians, frontline teams, operational and Executive Teams. The role will also manage the Quality Improvement Board providing visible support and leadership across the Trust.
The post holder will act as the expert advisor on Quality Improvement, providing advice, guidance, support and challenge to clinical, non-clinical and managerial staff at all levels; providing professional leadership for QI practice and QSIR methodology.
Plan and lead the communication of the QI strategy to all stakeholders across the system, developing a targeted and sophisticated communications and engagement plan. You will be a very visible presence, and a focal point for all things Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, developing an open and honest culture and support staff at all levels to speak up and improve their practice.
The post holder will manage the Quality and Patient Safety team, supporting the Deputy Director in leading the governance function and team within the Directorate. The post holder will be accountable for maintaining the requirements of the Trust CQC registration, ensuring that the Trusts requirement to monitor the standards of care it provides are fulfilled and that external bodies, including Commissioners, CQC and NHSE/I quality indicators and reporting requirements are achieved and their needs are met.
