Job responsibilities

Matron is responsible for the leadership and management of nursing or midwifery within a defined group of clinical services in a Division. (See diagram) They are a key member of the management team for the Division, working closely with the Head of Nursing for the care group. They have joint responsibility for the effective delivery of quality, financial and operational performance of the service line including ownership of Key Performance Targets and Measures for the service. Service specific aims, objectives and KPIs will be detailed in each post holders personal appraisal.

They are responsible for the delivery of safe, clinically and cost effective and compassionate care within the service providing assurance evidence in this regard to the Associate Director of Nursing, and Head of Nursing. This includes but is not limited to health care acquired infection, privacy and dignity including single sex accommodation, nutrition, patient involvement and engagement, learning and improving service quality by learning from incidents and complaints.

Matron has professional leadership responsibility for Sisters, Team Leaders and responsibility for the delivery of nursing services within the Care Group. This responsibility may extend to groups of Allied Health Professionals.

Matron establishes and fosters an effective working relationship with colleagues from the multi-disciplinary team across the services managed within the Care Group utilising their negotiating and influencing skills to secure and support change and improvement in care and service delivery within the Care Group.

  • Registered nurse (relevant to the field of practice of the Care Group and or Matron).
  • Live NMC Registration.
  • Educated to a bachelor's degree level in Nursing, Midwifery, Leadership and Management, Allied Health Professional degree or direct experience or transferable education.
  • Management Qualification or relevant experience for at least 2 years.
  • Expert knowledge of nursing practice and understanding of related clinical services providing clinical advice to annual planning and service developments.
  • Evidence of a leading role in improving clinical services and delivering the clinical governance agenda
  • Experience of managing a budget and resources.
  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of both Care Group and Trust objectives.
