Medical Laboratory Assistant
Band 3
Full-Time (37.5 hours per week)
To work in a small team to cover all of the duties for specimen reception, specimen dissection, machine maintenance and laboratory duties. This will include washing up and filing. Attention to detail good communication and the ability to concentrate in an often noisy and busy environment is essential.
Main duties of the job
Receiving histology and cytology specimens into the Department and recording the date and time. Checking that all specimens received fulfil the criteria for Specimen acceptance, i.e. patient's details on the specimen container and on the request form are correct and match. That the nature of the specimen is clearly identified on the container and form and rejecting specimens that do not fulfil the acceptance criteria.
Preparing the Cut-up bench on a daily basis, prior to the commencement of macro-dissection by the Histopathologists and Biomedical scientists. Storage and retrieval of examined specimens as require.Assisting the Histopathologists, during the Cut-up procedure. Booking specimens into the Laboratory computer system.
Using and maintaining the Department's tissue processors and other equipment. Performing the cover slipping of stained slides after routine Haematoxylin and Eosin staining.
