Job summary

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust is excited to offer a new role training as an apprentice to become a registered Speech and Language Therapist on the Isle of Wight. The Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service are seeking an enthusiastic, reliable and highly motivated individual to join our busy, varied and exciting team, to support and provide care to patients in relevant need on the Isle of Wight. As an apprentice, you will be given clinical training in areas including patient assessment, treatment and evaluation, as well as the non-clinical elements of governance, research and audit.

There is a commitment to attend the University of Sheffield remotely. There may be a requirement to travel to mainland services to complete clinical placement. There will be protected time during the working week for the successful student to study and attend online lectures. After successful completion of the 4-year programme, the apprentice will become a qualified Speech and Language Therapist with ongoing employment as a Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist in the Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service

Main duties of the job

Job purpose

To work as an apprentice towards being a qualified Speech and Language Therapist by developing both clinical and theoretical knowledge and skills.

To provide a high standard of Speech and Language Therapy for The Isle of Wight NHS Trust, putting the client's needs at the core of care

Job statement

  • To complete 4 Year University led BSc Speech and Language Therapy Apprenticeship and to obtain HCPC registration.
  • To develop the knowledge and skills required of a Speech and Language Therapist as listed in the job description.
  • To attend the mandatory weekly academic attendance at the selected Higher Education Institute (HEI).
  • To engage in the mandatory minimum 20% directed and self-directed study, either locally at the apprenticeship placement or at a Trust hub.
  • To engage with the learning, clinical training and portfolio activities, and discussions with allocated mentors and assessor.

People employed in our community, mental health and learning disability services by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust on 31 March 2024, will transfer to the new organisation under Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) on 1 April 2024.

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust will continue to deliver both acute and ambulance services for the island population.

    • Access to HE Diploma: Award of Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject, with 45 credits at Level 3, including 36 at Distinction and 9 at Merit

Salary: Band 5 Annex 21

Starting Salary represents 60% of the top of Band 5. In subsequent years the salary will increase to 65% in year 2, 70% in year 3 and 75% in year 4.

Approximately 60% of your working week will be clinical within the department here on the Island and 40% for study in line with the University requirements.

On completion of the degree course and receipt of full HCPC registration the candidate would be employed within the Trust as a Band 5 Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist post in the Childrens Speech and Language Therapy Service. Pay will be reflected accordingly as that at the time (subject to the usual uplifts and cost of living arrangements that have been put in place during the preceding 4 years.)
