Job summary

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic colleague to join our team of consultants in the provision of Ophthalmology services on the Isle of Wight. The successful candidate will work alongside the existing Consultants and will take the lead on our oculoplastic and paediatric services. The post is full time consisting of clinics and theatre lists.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide a comprehensive ophthalmology service. Outpatient work is carried out at St Mary's hospital in the Ophthalmology Department and in the custom-built Eye Care Centre, which includes Minor Operations and the new Eye Theatre.

The post holder will have responsibility for diagnosing and treating a range of Ophthalmology conditions with a specialist interest in paediatrics and oculoplastic.

The post holder will provide professional supervision and management of junior medical staff and participate in a weekday second on-call rota on a 1:4 basis.

About us

The Ophthalmology Department provides a wide range of medical and surgical ophthalmology services to the population of the Isle of Wight including vitreoretinal, cataract, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, orthoptics, medical retina/ uveitis, emergency and general ophthalmology are provided. A hybrid oculoplastic service is organised with Portsmouth, QAH. The latest acquisition of Barrett suite with the IOL Master 700, with National Ophthalmic Database (NOD) participation, enables excellent cataract facilities.

The eye department is active in research with several ongoing international and national studies, including a national AMD study and previous international genetics research. There are opportunities to publish research papers and presentations. We have close links with Health Education Wessex and one trainee at ST3 or ST4 level on rotation.

The role includes emergency duties (including emergency work carried out during or arising from on-call); operating sessions including pre-operative and post-operative care, outpatient activities, clinical diagnostic work and other patient treatment.

Consultants provide a second on call service during the week (Monday Thursday 9am 7pm and Friday 9am 5pm). This post holder will cover this rotationally in agreement with their colleagues. In addition, when carrying out on call the post holder will be required to grade incoming referrals, this attracts an additional 0.5 DCC PA.

Qualifications

Essential

  • FRC Ophth or equivalent.
  • Membership with the Royal College of Ophthalmology.
  • GMC registration and licence to practice.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Ophthalmology via a. CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), b. CESR or c. European Community rights.

Experience and Skills

Essential

  • Completed a recognised training programme in Ophthalmology.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence.
  • Ability to diagnose and manage all common ophthalmic conditions, including ophthalmic emergencies.
  • Surgical experience, particularly phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
  • IT skills including bespoke Opthalmology software.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of current trends in specialities.

Teaching and Audit

Essential

  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, post-graduates and junior medical staff.
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit relevant to speciality.

Desirable

  • Publications in peer reviewed journals.
