Job summary
This full-time post is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious specialty doctor to join our department in the provision of Paediatric services. There is room in the job plan for applicants to undertake own clinics and this will depend on the experience and ability of the successful candidate.
This is a full-time position but candidates wishing to work part-time or job-share are encouraged to apply. If a person is appointed on a part-time or job-share basis the job plan will be modified following discussion with the appointee.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of this post are located at St Mary's Hospital, Newport. The post holder will perform duties on a shift system with prospective cover for leave.
In all the responsibilities the Specialty Doctor is directly responsible to and under supervision from the on-call consultant or associate specialist.
Paediatrics operates 2 tiers on-call cover. Out of hours the Specialty Doctor is supported by the non-resident on-call consultant or associate specialist.
The Specialty Doctor will be expected to have both neonatal and general paediatric experience and be able to competently manage both sick children and neonates. The doctor will be expected to be able to attend difficult deliveries and to be able to resuscitate a newborn if needed. They will be expected to do routine baby checks and to carry out neonatal ward rounds when on neonatal duty. When on duty for paediatrics the Specialty Doctor will be expected to see, assess and instigate initial investigations and management on all children referred from either the GP or Emergency department, and to look after the children on the children's ward. The Specialty Doctor will also be expected to have up to date paediatric resuscitation skills.
The Specialty Doctor is encouraged to attend and participate in the active professional development programme, which involves clinical meetings as well as formal ward rounds. In addition the Specialty Doctor is encouraged to participate in clinical audit projects.
About us
The Department, integrated within Children's Service's, provides Paediatric and Child Health Services for the Children's ward, Children's day ward, Children's Outpatients (St Mary's and peripheral clinics), Maternity and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Paediatric and child health needs in the community are met through the immunisation programme and nationally agreed health surveillance programmes, with close collaboration with health visitors and paediatric community nurses. There is a comprehensive general paediatric service, also covering paediatric oncology, paediatric diabetes and endocrinology, cystic fibrosis, neurodisability and ADHD.
The post-holder will work within Paediatrics providing medical care for patients There are nineteen paediatric beds. The ward has 12 beds and a designated HDU bed and there is a 6 bed day ward. In practice, approximately half of these beds (including the day ward beds) are used for surgical admissions. Paediatric admissions range from newborn to up to 18 years. There is a separate unit for nursing children with infections or who are immunocompromised. Parents are encouraged to stay with their children. There are excellent facilities on the ward with access to one play therapist.
There is an adjoining office for the junior doctors and visiting students and also the central office for the community children's nurses.
