Specialist
Paramedic in Urgent Care, SP-UC, Specialist Practitioner UC
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service is developing new roles for Specialist Paramedics in both pre-hospital critical care and pre-hospital
urgent care and in our Emergency Operations Centre. We are seeking a Paramedic
or Nurse qualified as a Specialist Practitioner in Urgent Care or very near
completion to be involved in this small, innovative team.
Applications will be considered from candidates,
A, they are a paramedic with an interest to develop into a SP-UC or even
ACP, who can demonstrate that they are able to study at MSc Level. This would
be subject to individuals experience and education but can be supported in band
6 development post before career progression onto SP-UC or ACP pathway.
B, already qualified ECP / FCP and SP-UC and seeking a challenge within
the Ambulance and Community Service Urgent Care Environment, looking to explore
further career development and progression to an ACP.
C, Portfolios will be assessed, and skills matched to IOW SP-UC and ACP
job descriptions during Interview stage.
The role will combine mixture of Operational Solo working on the Rapid
response Vehicle, day and night shifts, Specialist Desk within Control Hub and
rotations within other community services.

The successful candidate will undertake their clinical practice in their own specialist field, but be supporting the development of staff, services and clinical pathways across both Ambulance Urgent Care and Community Services. The unique island environment and our integrated organisation allows us to be innovative and to work collaboratively other services. We are a small service, with a small team of specialist paramedics, some of whom are on Advance Clinical Practitioners (ACP) pathways, so this really is an opportunity to shape services and positively impact outcomes for our population.

To work as an autonomous practitioner as part
of a multi professional team in the delivery of the care as directed by the
ambulance service.
To manage own caseload in response to unpredictable
patterns of work
To provide care and treatment to patients
presenting with undifferentiated emergency, urgent and unscheduled care
problems, managing patients in, or closer to home, presenting with chronic and
long-term conditions, as well as minor or major illness, and minor or major
injury
To exhibit an advanced breadth and depth of
knowledge combined with critical thinking and expertise in patient assessment,
point of care patient diagnostics and clinical interventions which will be
supported by an extended scope of practice beyond that required for HCPC or NMC
registration.
To develop knowledge and skills in identified
areas of specialist practice and contribute to pan-service education, training,
and research and audit activity.
To work to a defined medical model with the
attitude, skills and knowledge base to deliver holistic care and treatment
within a variety of settings with a broadly defined level of autonomy.
To enhance the patients experience through
their emergency, urgent and unscheduled care journey by providing
emergency/urgent assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
Provide an operational response/clinical treatment to patients who may
have presented through the 999 / 111 systems or through a walk in clinic
setting.

policy and procedure, until relieved by an appropriate Incident Commander.
To maintain timely communications with the Emergency Operations
Centre/Clinical Hub, using any means available and appropriate during
operational shifts, ensuring that the Emergency Operations Centre/Clinical Hub
is aware of operational availability at all times.
To undertake stand-by duties as directed by the Emergency Operations
Centre/Clinical Hub, in accordance with current policies and escalation
procedures.

provide enhanced clinical support and supervision of staff across a range of
clinical settings. Working as an autonomous practitioner within a MDT, the SP
will provide advanced clinical management and co-ordination of complex and
challenging care to patients in clinically demanding situations and
environments. The SP will affect the correct clinical assessment, treatment and
care pathway for a range of patients with emergency and urgent care needs
safely and in line with level of training and competency. This will be in
accordance with Trust policies, procedures and protocols, national guidelines
(e.g. JRCALC), professional body guidelines/codes of conduct and current
legislation at all times.
SPs will be selectively targeted and deployed
as a primary response, co-responder or additional resource as directed by the
communications centre. In addition the post holder will be required to:
Provide leadership and management to more junior clinical staff
including supervision and performance management
Provide leadership to other clinicians on duty ensuring patient needs
are prioritised appropriately
Actively participate in clinical audit
Actively identify, report and act on any clinical risks
Contribute to and apply policies, procedures and guidelines
Identify educational needs of self and others and proactively meet these
needs
Work alongside senior management colleagues and the ambulance clinical
and quality lead to develop and implement innovative ways of working to benefit
